I am going to try to make a hidden tang knife that has a really curved handle. I want to put a brass guard and butt plate on it. What is a real good way of attaching the pommel without attaching it to the tang?
Thanks
Cal

When i do it i hard silver solder or braze another piece of grooved brass rod on to the butt plate the drill a hole and epoxy it in then clamp till dry.

BUT THAT'S CHEATING!! Yeah, me too if it is a radical curve. Antler can be straightened though. At least to a gentler curve.

Its a stick tang knife so the butt plate is just an embelishment as long as it is not marketed as a through tang.

Right, but i guess my question is why not just make it a through tang, and increase the strength? I'm sure there's a reason, somone jus needs to get it through my thick skull...I've always preferred to just do a through tang.

There was a thread about two months ago that talked about using sections of bike chain for a hinge inside a curved hidden tang handle. I will search for it, but it might take a while.

After so much curve it is impossible to drill all the way through without drilling through the sides of your handle material. You could split your handle material down the center and carve it out for your tang if you wanted to have a through tang.

I have a drawing I am going to use. I will try to get it posted in a bit. We are having tornadoes and severe thunderstorms here in southern OK. I could bend the tang before heat treating, but it would be a big bend. Post in a bit if we still have power.

Attached is a drawing of the knife I want to build. It has quite a curve in it, but I really like the looks. I could bend the tang, but was wondering if there was a better way. Should have shown picture with first post. Sorry! Couldn't get picture to post, so I attached a link.

By the way, tornado missed us. Took 8 lives in a community close by.

Make that handle a through tang. If needed, weld/braze an extension on the stick tang. You can even weld/braze on a piece of brass to match the butt plat, or use mild steel. Drill two holes in the handle, one from each end, intersecting in the middle. Open them up a bit so the curved tang can pass through. Fill the voids with epoxy when you mount the handle, attaching the butt plate by either peening the tang into a rivet, or threading on a pommel nut (acorn nut). It takes a little more work, but the results are superior.

Ok guys, I will take your advice. A through tang it shall be. When I get it cut out, I will post it.
