Attaching Pyrocream

I'm expecting the arrival of pyrocream to afix onto the platen that I've built for my MMG. Just wondering about surface preparation of the 2 mating surfaces. 1 Scuff both surfaces with 60 grit abrasive, 2 clean both surfaces with acetone, 3 glue em together with JB weld, epoxy, or similar adhesive.

Does that sound about right?

Thanks for the replies :)

I used the 3M spray adhesive and it hasn't budged in over a year.

Thanks Mark,

Did you use abrasive to prepare the mating surfaces? How long is the cure time?

I justv sprayed each surface and let it cure for about 5 min. Then mated the two and let it sit for about an hour. Works just fine.

Beaver, I know alot of people who used JB or was it JD. :D I have had mine on with JB for a few years and to take it off heat it up with a torch or some of my HT relish or sorry you don't have anymore. :( :D

I used that PC-7 to attach mine. If you aren't familiar with PC-7, its just like JB weld. All was fine until I got lazy and tried to sharpen a grub-axe on my BIII and cracked the Pyroceram. It still works as good as before, but has that hairline crack now. I'm such a dumbf*ck sometimes... (shut yer hole, IG... I know what you are going to say!) :D

Hmmm... Something IG said made me wonder if I can just flip my pyroceram over to get a flat side again. Mine's attached with JB Weld, I think I'm going to try heating it off and flipping it over.

One thing about the pyroceram, I have worn enough of a divot in it to make it hard to find a truly flat spot on it anymore. Makes it hard to flatten bolsters and ricassos. My first one lasted about two years so I guess that's pretty good service considering the steel one lost its flatness in about a month...

Don't remind me Wally, somebody is holding out on the relish....I do't know who, but what the heck, the only part of me that is thankful for not having the Relish is my butt.

Rene, your too cool, knowing that I would need instruction, but you know what they say, "REAL MEN DON'T READ INSTRUCTIONS"

Would I say anything :( Oh!!! What do you mean sometimes??? :D

Well, the Relish,,,,eerrrrr,I mean pyrocream came in today with mounting instruction curtesy of Rene Roy, but, I got a real long honey do list, the platen has to take a back seat till tomorrow morning. :grumpy:

5 minute devcon epoxy here. It's been around two years and it's still on good.

Thanks for info on the methods you all used for attaching the pyrocream to a platen. I kinda like the quick curing ( because ya want to play NOW) epoxies and the double sticky tape is cool too. I've got some 2 hour curing epoxy, so that's what I'll use.

Again Fellers, thanks for the info :)

JB weld. Been on over a year. BUT, I haven't used my grinder as much as most probably.

so much for the 2 hour stuff. After I took the 4" X3" angle, burned it to shape, drilled and tapped the mounting holes, cut and radiused the pyrocream, the first thing that I found for adhesive was JB weld, so that's what it's attached with. I guess I'll start using it tomorrow. Not a big deal got plenty of other stuff to do, remember that Honey Do list I was talking about

Yup that's what I did. Used the scotch double sided pressure tape. Works very well. Even added some cush. No muss, no fuss, no cure time. Remove with scraper and acetone.

Really seems most any way of adhering it will work.

Heh, reminds me, friend asked for glue yesterday, and got to thinking, that I have 10-20 different kinds of adhesive here(two epoxies, two wood glues, regular glue, super glue, rubber cement, barge cement, etc). Not quite sure how I ended up with all of those. :)

Oh, my contribution to the thread itself. I used contact cement on mine, still works great. :) But I also don't do a lot of grinding in first place, or flat grinding in particular.
