I'm making a simple two edged knife. I'm just using my Dads bench grinder and would like to know what others use. Also I would like to know how people atatch their handles and finger guards, thank you.

Welcome to the forums livewire! Congratulations on starting your frustrating byt very rewarding project. I made my first knife using a file to remove unwanted steel. Last X-Mas I got a 2x42" belt sander that has an 8" disc sander on it as well. This has suited my grinding needs very well

To stick on a handle depends on which type of knife you are making. I have only made "full tang" knives where you drill some holes in the side of the handle area of the knife, drill matching holes in some handle material and pin and epoxy them on. After the epoxy has set, grind grind grind, hand sand some more, buff it up with a buffer and Voila!!! I have yet to make a guard- do a search on that for a wealth of info.

Also, go to your local library and look for knife making books- most libraries have them.

Good luck and let us know how you're progressing

One problem is that I do not know what any of that means. The blade is 6" long, 3/8" across, and the whole piece of steel is 10". I already started making the handle, it is 4.5" long, 9/8" deep, and 7/8" across. I was thinking of taking 1.5" off the end of the steel, taking a little of the edges, then drilling a series of wholes in the handle going straight down, I would then put the end in and put epoxy or something to hold it.

I would say it is similar to the boot knife on your page only the blade is real thin, 1/8" from flat side to flat side. Thanks.

Live wire,It sounds like you are making a full tang knife, which means that the metal for the blade and handle are all one piece.I have a picture tutorial on my website about how I make a coke bottle shaped handle. It is for a hidden tang knife, but this handle is 3 pieces with a piece of metal in the center so it will give you an idea about how to attach scales and about what it should look luke, when you look at the pictures just imagine that the blade is sticking out the end....go here:

If you still cant figure it out email me at beknives@avsia.com
and I will try to explain it to you,if you want email me your phone number and I will call you and explain it that way..Bruce

I used my dads 3x24 sander to put the blade on it worked great. I never even thought of using a sander, but it worked great. Its just meant to be a crude knife so I just used some bolts which I sunk into the handle to attatch it. I made a brass guard for it earlier which I need to figure out how to attatch. I'll need to make another one now since I figured out exactly what to do, thanks a lot.
