hello, been a while since i last posted, been out of the loop a bit the past year or so.

anyways, im kinda needing some new sheathes for some of my knives, and i was considering trying to make some of my own out of kydex/concealex, and was looking for some input on how difficult this is, and whether i should bother investing any time or money in it.

also, if anyone has any links/addresses to online sites that go over the basic process of making a kydex sheath, that would be really helpfull.

i read the article in, i think it was tactical knives a while back, but ive lost the actuall article, and forgot most of the details

any and all help/advice/info would be greatly appreciated
thanx

thanx, i feel a little silly for forgetting the search feature, just read through a plethora of old postings, now ill have to see if i can locate a heatgun or maybe even a toaster oven? to heat the stuff with before i buy some.

Just throw it in the oven at 300 deg till soft. If you make a mistake in forming the case, just stick it back in the oven, the kydex will get soft and flatten out again.

BTW, it took 3 attempts for the sheath I made for my tanto shown on my web page.

I need all the help I can get, sooo...
I use both a heat gun and a toaster oven. The oven is used to heat the piece initially, the heat gun is good for touch up work.

A blow torch is a good stress reliever when things go really bad!!!

thanx for all the help, i read through pretty much all the old posts i could find, and im going to try making a press sorta thing, ive got some scrap plywood lying around, i figure ill glue/screw a few pieces together to get it pretty thick and sturdy, and i have a couple of the military sleeping pads in my locker, and ill use a couple of layers of them for the padding, i just have to get a toaster oven or a heat gun to heat the kydex with.

again, thanx for all the info and help

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

:
I used my wife's hairdryer/blowdryer to heat up a Busse kydex scabbard that was loose and rattleing.
I know that it doen't get near as hot as a heat gun, but for minor adjustments it works fine.
But I dayum sure wouldn't hold this hairdryer up to any old paint for very long either.
The thing gets a whole lot hotter than I would have ever suspected and I would bet that it would take old paint off!!!
There should be a warning on it about the heat, but I guess they figure that if it feels to hot the ladies will either turn it down or quit.
But I know a few (ladies?) that probably wouldn't think about doing
either.
