A friend of mine is seeking advice on a EDC knife for Duty carry. He is currently enrolled in the academy.

Since I have no idea what tasks may he may run into during his tour of duty, I'll ask you.

Something below $150.00.

My current: Benchmade 805 TSEK AXIS (good bang for the buck)

Other favorites of mine and often mentioned here:
  • Benchmade AFCK
  • Al Mar SERE 2000
  • Spyderco Military
  • Spyderco Police (of course ;))

Buck Strider Tarani (speciffically made for LEO's) It's kinda like a Strider SnG that anyone can afford ($130 give or take)

Greco folder (he will have to carry it in a belt pouch or in the pocket since there is no clip)

Benchmade Griptillian

Camillus Dominator

I own all of the above knives and rotate them frequently for duty carry. I used to carry my Strider SnG, but I almost lost it once, and I have not carried it since (too much money to loose if it should happen to fall out during a foot chase, or while climbing a fence...)

Just my two cents...The knife I have used on duty more than anything else is my Leatherman Wave. It fits perfectly inside a magazine pouch.

MOD makes a few with a nice window punch on the end, and they are pretty high quality.

Hard pressed to beat a Spyderco Police, especially now in Carbon fiber.

I carry my Spyderco Starmate every shift, but they are hard to come by now that they have been discontinued. Also any Axis lock BM would do nicely, although I keep hearing about quality control problems lately.

Kershaw boa's or other assisted openers are another great option.

There are lots out there, so tell your buddy to check a few quality models, and buy the one he liukes best.

Regards

My suggestion had always been a Spydie Military or Police, but was going to check with the Experts first. Was thinking of something with alittle more spine to it, on the off chance he felt he needed to get into it without having to worry about breaking the point off. Did suggest a Leatherman Wave or a Gerber 800. Thanks for the ideas.

Alot of departments have G.O.'s covering what equipment is allowed on a duty belt (specific in alot of cases even as to where on the belt the equipment has to be carried!), so you'd probably be better off with a pocket clip vs. a sheath.

I have a friend that is an LEO and he carries a Benchmade 3550 Pardue automatic. The knife is a little on the small side but is very inconspicuous, good cutter too.

Depends on departmental policy and what is "allowed" to be carried or not for that matter. Most LEOs find the need of a knife for utility and emergency situations. But not as often for a self defense matter. A good quality small fix blade may be a good choice where rapid deployment is not primary. Perhaps a custom Dozier made with choices of kydex sheaths. Starting at about $145 and very well worth it.

He'll get all he needs from an SAK and/or a multitool. I carry a Victorinox Swisschamp and a Gerber 600.

Forget fixed blades or spendy folders; simple & cheap does the job.

I have a few that I rotate through. Most are around or under the $100 mark. Most are zytel/frn or g10 type handles. I find that aluminum handles get dented and worn too fast. Black pocket clips are my first choice. Blades are usually around 3.5" or so. Polished silver clips stand out too much.
A few that come to mind:
Spyderco Endura, Delica, Native
Kershaw Avalanche
Benchmade Griptillians, 710, 721, 803, 813
Camillus CUDA Quick Action
Cold Steel Voyager
Al Mar SERE 2000
CRKT M1 Lightfoot

A Leatherman MultiTool (or similar) is mandatory as well.

SAK or Leatherman, with Phillips screwdriver. This will actually get used, everything from changing radio batteries to repairing cruisers in the field.

While I always have a heavy duty knife with me, I cannot recall ever needing anything other than the aforementioned, except on those occasions when Hurst tools and powersaws were involved.

Concur with previous comments regarding policy and would add that Academy rules may preclude the possession of "weapons". Before someone tries to sodomize me, this is typically a safety requirement to reduce the risk of contaminating scenario based training with "foreign" weapons

Hi W.S.,

What's a Hurst tool?

TIA.

The jaws of life; Used to open up cars with people trapped in them it can cut metal roofs like sissors through paper to gain access to injured people it is a hydraulic system using a 12 volt pump motor. There are several different heads for them to choose from depending on the need. consider it the biggest freaking diagonal side cutters you have ever seen

Always check department regs first. I would recommend a multi-tool first. A good second choice, if you can find one, is the Buck Cross lock. I have seen more Buck 110s on gun belts than anything else, but multi-tools are gaining ground fast. A man can always carry more than one.

I have been buying knives for the patrol guys at work for about a year now.

They ahve been very happy with the price and performance of the Cold Steel Voyager in its various shapes and sizes.

I also ike the Spyderco Endura and the almost anything Kershaw or Benchmade.
for 150 he could probably get the voyager and the endura.

good luck,

mike
