Hello,

I was told that you were the go-to for problems/questions regarding
switchblades!

I am a newbie knife maker (fixed blade) that was asked by a co-worker to repair an old Schrade switch blade that belonged to his father-in-law. Like a dummy  , I agreed to, at least, try my hand at repairing the knife and now am in need of some expert advice.

Basically, the scales need to be replaced. The problem here is that the cover/button(or whatever it's called) for the spring mechanism, is gone. I also afraid of disassembling the knife incorrectly and would very much appreciate any suggestion for performing the project. I bought the Complete guide to pocket knife repair by Kelly bit it does not cover automatics. Can you help ? please?

Many thanks,

Hello I do not repair knives however it you go to the Levine forum and post this question to Bill Deshiv. I believe he could do better on this one than me. He is a well known automatic knifemaker I know your problem and if you cannot get an answer let me know the model and handle materials what size knife ect and perhapes I can post or send you a j peg of the schematic this shows all the parts ect. Let me know . LT PS just as an amateur the basic premise is to drill the rivits and take the scales off the button must be fabricated and soldered to the piece there will be ( since it is a schrade ) a little piece that slides in under the new button which keeps the button from being depressed. ( this is the safety ) Then you will need to re rivit. Pretty straight forward to someone with some mechanical ability. The style of knife and correct handle materials ( if you are restoring to original ) may pose the biggest problem. I hope this helps.

for all the information. I will give Bill a try, and would also greatly appreciate seeing the diagram of the exploded view if/when you get the chance.

Kind regards,

Please advise model and size of the knife in question so that I can post the appropriate diagram. LT

I will have to retrieve that information tonight and get back to you tomorrow in the a.m.

Thanks a lot,

OK but if you just give me an idea like is it a one blade hunter or a little double. The smaller version single blade is the business model. is it a Schrade Walden or Schrade Cut Co. doubles were made in 2,7/8" 3,3/8" and 3.3/4"just a general idea and I can post someting similiar since with certain modifications they all fit into similar patents. They also made single blade versions similar to the double as well as fishtails but again just an idea and I can send an exploded view.

Here is a view of a double and a fishtail the mechs are all kissing cousins in the big ones and small ones but this should give you some idea. Let me know if you need it and I will try to find a hunter or business blow up. But actually this should give you an idea how they are put together.
