I just recently purchased through a private seller a CQT Magnum folder made by TOPS. The knife was originally purchased in December of 2000 and having never been used is still in mint condition. However, since this is the only CQT Magnum I have ever held and examined I need some reference from other Magnum owners regarding the liner lock mechanism.

1.) When the knife opens the end of the liner lock closest to the pivot protrudes about 1.5mm outside of the frame. Once the blade is in place I am then able to press the edge of the liner back up into the frame. Is this a normal function of this knife? It doesn't seem normal, it seems loose but if this is how the knife functions then so be it.

2.) The liner lock is attached to the frame at the rear of the lock by only three screws. It seems to me that if there were a second screw placed midway in the liner this would alleviate the subtle up/down movement of the liner. Could those of you with later model Magnums take a look at your knife and tell me if the liner attachment has ever been modified?

I'm probably going to send the knife into TOPS for inspection and possible repair but I wanted to get some feedback from other owners first just in case the knife is performing normally.

Thanks.

Bullwhip: I have one of the first Magnums, so I might not be the one to answer your questions. It is easy to tell if your was an original design or a later design. The orginals do not have any cross hatch lines on the handles for gripping. There were other changes (to the lock thinkness etc) but the handle markings is the easiest way to tell the age.

If I understand your descriptions correctly, yours is the same as mine. It does not seem to be a defect at all.

The only real complaint I have about the Magnum that I have is due to the liner shape (and the 1.5 mm protruding part) makes it possible to loosen the liner lock, a tiny bit, when twisting the open knife. In other words, when twisting the knife against an object it is easy for your thumb or index finger to push the liner a bit to loosen the lock.

I do not use the Magnum nearly as hard and as much as it was designed for, so I have never had any failure or problem. If you are concerned, send it back to Tops to check it out. Tops customer service is really good, but don't try to contact them thru email. Use the phone (the old fashioned way). However, based on your description, you did not buy a defective knife.

By the way: the Magnum is one of my favorite folding knives. Strong tough and very much like a fixed blade when it is opened.

jayharley,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, the Magnum I bought is one of the earlier models since it does have the smooth grip. It also has the number 060 underneath the TOPS insignia. I'm not sure if they number them now or not.

I'm very pleased with the knife as well. Very simple and rugged. The blade has absolutely no play in it at all.

Come on, I know that just about everyone on this forum has a hard on for Striders, Sebenzas and AFCK's but there has to be more than one other person with a Magnum folder here. ;)
