Hey guys - a quick question for you.
Now that I'm the proud papa of an RC-4, I have no need for my never-used Gerber LMF knife. Rather than sell it, I think I'll just give it to a buddy of mine who will be deploying to Afghanistan soon. I ETSed in 1987, so I have no idea what the rules are, if any, regarding knives as personal equipment. The Army doesn't issue a knife to combat arms personnel, do they?
Am I going to get him into trouble if I ship a knife to him at his stateside post before he ships out? The Gerber is no RAT, but I'm thinking one of our guys in Afghanistan might get more use out of it than I.

Thoughts/advice?

Thanks in advance.
KD

My buddy just shipped out and from what he said there is no regulation issuse, but it depends on what his unit allows, so I'd ask your friend

There were no issues for us when we deployed (returned in Apr) and I'm not aware of any changes since then. Shouldn't be an issue unless his unit has their own rules.

Ok that sort of thing is unit specific and at the commanders discression. Honestly we had an E-7 who packed like 6 knives with him and he had a like 10 inch blade attached to his assault pack. The gerber knife you are talking about is sold at our px back at Ft. Lewis and here at FOB Sykes so i dont think it would be an issue then again it is at the commanders discression but for the most part once a unit deploys the upper levels kind of lay off and let the first line sergeants handle that kind of stuff. If you friend is in Afghanistan he could probably use it ( who cant use a good knife) but as far as having it back in conus posts usually the rule is no larger then 4 inch blade but if your buddy is at a tactical unit (which he is cause he is deployed) they typically dont care what kind of extras you have on your person as long as you have the minimum requirements like IOTV, ACH, weapon, force protection ammo, IFAK, and whatever other bs they want us to carry... I hope this helps tell your buddy to stay hard in the yard

Thanks, guys.
He's an artillery MOS, fresh out of Basic/AIT, serving with the 82nd ABN, and like you said, who can't use a good knife, especially in a combat zone?
I could probably just sell it, but I'd rather it go to a good home - to someone who might put it to better use than collecting dust in my closet.

Take care yourself, melch79.

Thanks again,
KD
