Pappy,

Just an update on the donated Khukri.

Seems the MGySgt. didn’t feel right keeping it as he is transferring to a CONUS based (non-deploying) EOD unit soon and then he’s retiring in a few years.

He decided to keep it at the squadron’s EOD team and pass it around to those deploying.

Basically it’s going to be spending the majority of it’s time in Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos until the recovery missions stop or we stop supporting the JTF FA mission.

The pass down is if the JTF FA mission goes away the Khukri is to passed on to other EOD Marines for deployment purposes. The future custodians will decide when and if to retire the Khukri to place of honor in the EOD compound.

Now there's a legacy Pappy.

I wonder how a new 'owner' will be picked.

I don't know how to answer the legacy thing and I hope that the khuk can continue to serve some one. I don't know about the retirement thing either. I would hate to think that it would sit in a glass case somewhere and do nothing but rust.

I thought it was too good a khuk to sit idle. That is why I sent the thing to be used. I hope it gets a lot of use before they put is away some where.:) :)

Pappy,

Retirement will be long after I leave the Marine Corps again. I have a feeling it’s going to hold up better than I do and get better maintenance to boot!

It’s being used for what Ben’s son would probably called abuse. The JTF FA (Joint Task Force Full Accounting) folks recover our Vietnam MIAs. They dig, chop, etc. to excavate suspected crash sites. They have to clear vegetation to and around the sites.

It has and will continue to get used.

The EOD Marines have a separate compound on Kadena AFB. I’d be willing to bet the original sheath will be gone and the handle will be at least repaired if not replaced.

Time to get in some PT and then off to a 4th BBQ.

The scabbard needing replacement I can understand. A need to replace the horn handle I do not understand. The horn should love the jungles where it is being used. A bit of Kiwi saddle soap should help it last one hail of a long time.:)

Pappy,

You forget we're talking about Marines here. You take a Marine PFC, strip him naked and put him in a padded cell with two anvils, what happens?

With ten minutes one anvil is missing and the other is broken.

I have witnessed some of the things that EOD Marines do with unexploded "things". It would not surprise me if they pounded on the handle either to drive the point in or once in to get a little more force on the pry bar aspect. Add in the fact that they sometines either just drop a tool or toss it away from what they are doing and I can see lots of opportunity for impact damage.
