I know this is off-topic but I also know you're a diver Sal. My son just got his certification and I want to surprise him with a good dive knife. What would you recommend in a fairly inexpensive but quality piece? Thanks.

Hi Gene. I am not up on the latest and greatest in Dive knives, so I don't think it fair or proper for me to suggest one. I can share some info.

I would look for one tht is easy to maintain. I find that the Titanium pieces don't cut to my standards. The more carbon in the steel, the better the cut, the worst the rust, so mntnce becomes the issue.

You might look into David Boye's Dendritic Cobalt knives or Rob's Talonite. They cut well and don't rust. That would be the direction I would choose first, but cost maybe an issue, and they're really not designed specificaolly for Diving, IMO.

I like the design of Kit's (Carson) Dive knife, but I'm not up on the material.

Believe the Buck Intrepid is the collaborative effort of Kit Carson and Buck. Have heard good things about that knife.

The Buck Intrepid 189T is a great knife and easily cleaned. I just sold 8 of them to a Georgia Fire and Rescue Dive Team. The handles can be unscrewed to allow cleaning of the tang. Not much better available unless you want to spend $300 for a Randall model 16. You should be able to get the Buck for less than $100.

And tell your son to always keep his buddy in sight.

A really good idea would be to do a new or updated run of the diver's probe from way back. I only have the smaller one. The blade in the cobalt based metals would be most satisfactory.

Please take your seats gentlemen; oh, and flip 'em if you've got 'em.

Hi RARanney. Though I still use the small dive probe when I dive, I think it was more complicated than most divers want.

If we were to do it again, (& it's possible), I would do with a more simple FB one piece design with a bulletproof sheath.

As far as the non ferrous stuff, I'd have to test the prying strength of the non ferrous materials (cobalt & Titan based) against a particular steel that we're currently testing before I could decide on a material.

It's possible--super! One piece like the now Colt manufactured Seal Knife (sheath covers the blade when using the end of the handle as a fence wire cutter). I have some Boye Dendritic bars--didn't think about pry strength though, you're right, it would be important. I think I can speak for all of us forumites in saying how much we appreciate your taking the time to listen and answer.

Sal,

I would also would be interested in a Spyderco Dive Knife. A folder would be neat but a fixed blade would probably be more practical and popular. I am glad to see that such a project is possible.

As an owner/diver/user of both the Diver's Probe and the Pre-Diver, I can say that they are both fine tools, AND more maintenance-intensive then most divers want to deal with. I think a one-piece fixed blade with or without scales (G-10?) loosely patterned after the Pre-Diver (With blade-hole please!)and a kydex or FRN sheath would be terrific!

Thanks for the responses eveyone. I'll check out the Intrepid. I do agree Sal that the Probes, (I used to have the large and small), were a bit complicated but super QUALITY. DO come out with a dive knife. You would do it RIGHT!
