Atwood knives...my jaw dropped to the floor

Just got in my Model 1 folder from fellow forum member Peter Atwood. When I opened the package, my jaw dropped to the floor. Inside the little zippered pouch was a beautiful piece of work.

The pictures on the website do not do this knife justice. It is a titanium framelock with an S30V blade. It has small details that make it really special. Portions of the frame and liner are "fluted" in several palces, the pocket clip has a locator pin that will eliminate any movement...great details. The price for this quality piece was very reasonable

Here is my dilemma. Do I carry this knife and use it with pride, or do I put it up to keep it in pristine condition. From what I understand of Mr. Atwood's work, all of his pieces are "one off" designs. He also dosen't use CNC machines in his knifemaking process.

I also got one of his "how to" videos. The video is great. It is amazing what this guy can do in a simple shop (no fancy, expensive machines here). Check out his website at http://www.realrates.com/knives

Carry it. You'll never sell it from the sounds of your post and your appreciation of it will only grow with use. Good knives were made to be used, that's my philosophy. I may end up with a few safe queens someday but for now all of my knives are users.

i could'nt use it.

takes me a long time to put a nice cheapy into service, a custom? naw, i just could'nt. Thats like usin the Mona Lisa as a placemat :D

gotta appreciate the art. paintings, hand crafted knives, thats stuff for above the mantle! IMO.

If you owned a Ford and a Ferrari, would you ever drive the Ferrari? (I hope so! :) )

I don't know what style of his knives you've got, but every one I've seen on his website is a user: ergonomic, fine materials, beautiful workmanship. Use it!

heck yah i'd drive the ferrari, that's why i only buy custom/semi custom because i love the way it feels and that's what i pay for, to use it, that's why the next knife i'm getting is a mayo and then a strider probably.

I think that knives are meant to be used.

otherwise, why make them sharp, ergonomic, tough and beautiful? to be merely fondled and looked at. You don't need sharp blade for that. a good knife is meant to be used hard (not abused though), and in using them hard, you are actually paying homage to the maker's skill and craftmanship. only if a maker's knives are used will he better his craftmanship (by learning from limitations, problems, characteristics of the blade, steel etc), and all makers always seek to improve themselves.

Wow, thank you for the kind words Kyle. I'm really glad you like the knife, and yes, please use it! :)

Sharpstick - There's no sense in having a fine knife if you don't use it. Take it out and put it through the paces!

Peter Atwood makes some of the most beautiful, original knives I have ever seen, but I believe they are made to be used. If you ruin one you can always buy another!
