Been hitting the auctions hard lately. Today was awesome! It was storming bad and there were only 20 people counting the auction workers there! I got this American made Rockwell/Delta drill (maybe mill?) for $60! The head rotates 360 degrees and comes out probably a foot. It rocks! The surface rust is from the rain today already. I also got the homemade anvil on heavy duty stand for $2 and got a belt driven grinder with motor on heavy stand for $10. I am going to mount my coote on the stand and make the grinder a buffer. That was the only thing holding me up, a stand. Well, that and a motor. Not anymore. Got a bunch of other stuff today not knife making related, like a brand spanking new commercial maculough(sp?) weed eater with a bunch of blades and two string heads for $12.50. Filled my truck up and spent $103.
Last week I got the baldor industrial 1 1/2 horse 110/220V 1725rpm motor for $10! Looks rough but purrs like a kitten! The hydraulic cylinders I got for a $1 each. Don't think I am there yet. The bigger one is about a 4", maybe 5" diameter with about a 6" stroke. Maybe work for a press? Also got the mig welder with tank and regulators for $60. It is only 85 amp but you can hook it up to 24V and it is 125 amp. No name on it but a Chicago address on the back. Still imagine it is one of those italian made migs off a matco truck or something.
Sorry about the long post and bunch of pictures but I am pretty happy and wanted to share since I have no knives yet to post. Soon, very soon! :)

Man oh man! Auctions around here don't have anything like that! Good find, and some good aditions to your shop.

I went to a school district auction here today and could not buy any thing because of the high prices. An old Delta wood lathe went for $450 and a broken down Delta belt disc sander went for $550! I love a good auction but usually end up with a lot mores tuff than I need.

I have been getting lucky lately. Not all luck, some heartache also. At this one auction where I got the motor, it was a community auction. They ran like 5 or 6 trucks at the same time all day. I stayed with the truck that was going down the row with the pile of motors (all big ones were 3 phase except that one I pulled out of the pile for my "choice" :D). Anyway, there were these 19 packs of truss plates. Not sure the real name but the plates you use when you build your own roof trusses. I won them for $5 then the auctioneer was like "How many packs do you want at $5 each?" Uh, 1, bass ****! :) This guy was pulling that crap all day. My buddy bought 4 large heavy duty casters for $9, then the auctioneer said it was "times your money" after he won and they cost him $36 for the four. Someone made a complaint against the guy I heard later.
There are a lot of auctions going on right now on the same days around here and I have been having good luck picking out the smaller auctions and going to them other than the auctions that have tons of good stuff listed. Like yesterday, there was a huge auction also that my buddy went to and there were tons of people and stuff went insanely high. The auction where I got the mig at stuff was cheap, IMO. I bid $250 and the next bidder won it for $275, a rough but running and driving Yamaha Banshee two stroke 4 wheeler. They also sold a 1988 4x4 extended cab 2500 chevy silverado with a lift kit and a tuned port injected 350. Running and driving. I bid $685 and the guy won it for $695. I about had a baby cow. I didn't have any more money and that was my wifes whole check and all of my check I had left when I bid. She was happy I didn't get it but I wasn't. For that kind of money anyway. I did talk to the guy that won it later and he said he was planning on bidding up to $1200 on it so I wouldn't have got it anyway. He just wanted it for a farm truck.
I have been going to our state surplus auctions also. I bought a 16', 6 1/2' wide lake jon boat for $375. They sold a radial mill for $12 while I was talking to a guy and missed it. I don't know where I would have put it though. That thing probably weighed a ton or more. It was super ancient anyway. :)

junkcarsrock---your drill press is known as a "radial" drill press and it can do some amazing things--- Good find, Right price!

A true story

So there I was driving around the town on a rainy Saturday afternoon when I saw the Garage Sale sign. I had nothing better to do, and the posted sign also had the intriguing "TOOLS" addition hand written in the margin.

I walked into the garage not expecting to see anything but the normal rusted garden shears and perhaps an old shovel with a broken handle that are the common offerings at such places.

But, what's this?....A Baddor Belt Grinder?,,,,I glance at the sign to inquire how much was being asked for this ultimate knife making machine?

What!!! $10.00?

Ten Bucks? "There must be some mistake", my eyes glance around, did I just say that out loud? I ask myself.

To the right there stands a card table that is filled with all sorts of 2 x 72 sanding belts, files, and a sweet collection of handle materials. Next to the grinder there is a Buffer all set up with 10-inch high quality buffing pads. A selection of what appeared to be the finest quality Damascus steels were casually strung across the table. Each with a masking tape price tag asking only 25 cents each!

I was stunned, I felt like my head was going to explode, I nervously glanced around, weary of any possible brother knife makers who might be lurking around.

I turned to the young girl who sat in a lawn chair with what seemed a very determined look on her face.

She addressed me. "Do you see anything you could use?"

"Yes I could use a few things I see you have for sale here" I said as calmly as I could, My excitement was now building so much that my voice had started to tremble.

"I believe I could take the whole collection that's over here" I wave my hand in the direction of the belt grinder and table.

"Good!" The lady says with some measure of defiance, "I would be glad to get rid of that Rat's junk right now!"

I reached for my wallet, Thank Gaud I had just filled it up at the cash machine.
I tossed down a crisp new $20
"Keep the change" I told her as I turned to grasp my new, mint condition belt grinder,

Just as I began to wrap my gleeful fingers around the grinders electric motor to lift it towards my waiting car, my bedside alarm sounded, and I found myself clutching my pillow

"NOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo...."

Junkcarsrock,
They call that drill a "radial arm drill" Most are real solid and once set up the arms are real stiff, Would only concider it a drill though.

Great deals, I wish they had better auctions up here.

That was about the same story as my factory 375 horse 440 magnum 1970 R/T Charger. But it is true. Best $500 I have spent. :D
Yep, figured out it is a radial drill. I ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer some times. :) I went today and bought a 1/2" thick piece of steel to mount the drill on a big cast iron stand I have. Cost me $20 for that steel! Got it going on now. I have plenty to keep me busy. Now I just need one more stand to mount my cast iron craftsman band saw. It is a big ancient wood band saw but I think it will work ok with a big enough motor and good blades for metal. I still plan on buying a homier mill. I got a Unimat lathe/mill and just won a taig lathe on ebay. Also ordered Bob Warner's hyd. press cd. Pretty excited about that. :)
Thanks for the kind words!
