I don't know if anyone here knows about Audis but I'll post anyway:

I'm looking for a cheap car for going to and from school and for use on the weekends. My requirements are that it be around $4,000 and have either AWD or RWD. I did some searching and found a 1990 Audi Coupe Quattro @125,000mi. at a dealership about 20mi. away. They're asking $5,000 but according to Edmunds it's only worth around $3,400.

My question is --- does this seem like a good find? If I go for a test drive, what should I look for? Are there any big problems with older model Audis that I should be aware of? Are there any other models that fit my requirements and that might be a better buy?

Any help at all (including links) is welcome. Thanks in advance.

Carefully consider parts and maintenance. I really like the Audi Quattro series of cars but, ownership costs are a concern. If you break it, would you be able to get parts to fix it in your town or city in a reasonable timeframe?

Why RWD or AWD? My experience with FWD on smaller cars has been very good. Sure, some of the GM front drivers really suck but the imports are great! I've driven them in sub-zero weather on ice and in snow with good results (and predictable behavior ;)).

Audi Quattros rule. My absolute favorite car hands down!! Had a 94' Audi 90 Quattro and LOVED it!!!!!!!!! With AWD, they can go places SUVs can't.:D

Before you go for a test drive, call the Parts Dept. of any Audi dealership and ask for current prices on a few parts: water pump, brake pads, etc. Also get prices for the same parts from a local auto parts discount place. Somewhere in between, you'll have a fair idea of what it will cost to keep that 13-year old Audi on the road and in safe driving condition.

I've owned a few Audis and they're not cheap to maintain after the warranty runs out! :(

I too have driven FWD imports. I just don't like their handling, to me, loosing traction on the front wheels is a lot scarier than losing it in back.

cockroachfarm (or anyone else who cares to respond):
What was the biggest cost in maintaining you Audi? Are Audis know to be bad used cars, or are they average?

Thanks for the responses so far? :)
