Auntie's Kindness and a Mini Wajaski

Some of you may recall that I expressed disappointment that I was too late when Auntie posted a blemished Mini Wajaski. Well, at Cul4u01's urging I asked Auntie if she had another blemished Mini Wajaski. Well the next morning she told me she didn't have another blemished one, but she did have an unblemished one that she would offer to me at the same price. I couldn't believe my luck. I jumped on her offer, and today received the Mini-Waj in the mail. It's a nice knife. It was made by Kumar, and it's about 18 inches long. The blade is not quite as sharp as I'd like, though testing it against the triangle box it arrived in, it can cut all the way through two sides. The third side is where it stops, which is as good as my kukris tend to do against their boxes, and at a much lower weight. I've not had a chance to test it against gallon jugs of water, though I'll be trying a few of those tonight after dinner.

So doing a little freeform work, I am impressed with the knife. I'm not used to a large conventional knife, all of my other large knives are kukris, which are rather unique. The knife behaves well in my hands, and it is nimble. I use a lot of what I've heard call flourishes or florets, and most smaller knives don't work well with them, but the Mini Wajaski works well with them. About the only complaint I have about the knife is that the handle is a little smaller than I like. Other than that, it's one good knife.

Here's one of the pictures I took. If you click on it you can scroll through the album with the rest. I'd post the other links, but Photobucket is being buggy.

Nice piece, i have a fondness for the Katana/Wajaski's and Auntie is an Angel. It doesn't appear the box faired to well. Mine was a blem, some rust had been removed. However, it was as sharp as they come. The hair on my arm just jumped off in fear of it's impending doom. Now the second part of the story. I bought a polisher to take care of some blem issues. There is definitely a learning curve. I first tore up my left wrist when the wheel grabbed the heavy khukri and wedged it on the bench while I was holding it tightly. Good thing it didn't break my wrist, still hurts like heck. Now I decide to tackle the Mini Wajaski even with the bad wrist, bad idea. Light blade technique is not the same as heavy blade technique. Well, the wheel snatched the blade almost instantly out of my hand taking off the end of my right hand middle finger with it's razor sharpness. I'm a bleeder so, by the time I got to the house and attempt to reattach the piece, the shop and house looked like a murder scene. The jury is out on whether the reattached piece takes. I'm not one for ER's or doctors in general. I thought I'd gift it to someone but thought it might have some bad MOJO I wouldn't want to pass on. It's been bloodied by me and we've made peace. As stubborn as I am, I continued working with it so it's no longer an ugly duckling but a glistening little jewel. I think that did the trick. That said, me and the polisher have a love hate relationship.

You know, I've heard people say stuff like that about all kinds of knives, but I don't think I've ever owned a knife that could shave out of the box, or even shave after being sharpened with my stones. I've heard people say it about certain brands, yet gotten knives that were only adequately sharp for use from those same brands.

Well you can definitely shave arm hair with it. Many of my knives can and how I usually test a knife after sharpening. My Gransfors Bruks Axes do so as well. Facial hair is another story and I've never tried it. However, the blade design and the fact at my age my facial hair has turned into .063 Stellite wire, I don't think things would go to well.

BB, be damn careful with the polisher my friend. It's been mentioned here before several times, that polisher sits on the bench like a rattlesnake coiled and ready to bite you when you least expect.
I have a piece of junk portable table saw that's the same way. I think it's cursed. Every time I turn it on I get hurt.

The polisher is kind of a sleeper though. You see the nice soft pad with a bit of compound on, what can it hurt right?

Bam! Gotcha. I been got myself.

Yes they are a wicked sleeper.

Glad you got one Scara, I love mine. It wasn't very dull, as you have described though, but not as sharp as BB's either. It was somewhere's between, after some work, it's razor sharp now.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily say it's very dull, just not as sharp as I'd like. Do you know if these have a convex edge? I'd like to sharpen my HI knives, but right now all I have for sharpening is a set of stones, and I don't want to reprofile the edge or damage it.

Mine has a convex edge for little that may make.

Okay, so I will need to get the stuff for the sandpaper method. Shouldn't be too hard. I've got easier access to a car now than I did before.

Mine is convex.

Have no fear BB. I'm gonna ring up Dr. Bookie. I'm sure he has a cure for that hurtful Wajasaki, then it occurred to me is isn't the Wajasaki that is hurtful, it's the dang polisher!
I must admit that I didn't totally buy into some of his Doctor exploits, Voo Doo, add infinitum but after meeting this legend in person I no longer question anything he says.

Well, if it involves my blood, I have the buffer and Wajaski covered. In fact, I also have the house and most things in it covered.

Do it Scara!
