Aus 8 steel rust resistance

So, I am interested in purchasing the SOG flash 1. However, I am wondering wether I should duracoat the blade or not. I have not had experience with aus 8, and want to hear if anyone has had good experiences with their Aus 8 steels from SOG ( did they rust up easily) ?

Iv'e had aus 8 steel rust on me before, however it was a bead blasted finish which makes it more susceptible.

Well ... I have an older SOG NW Ranger in AUS6 and it developed a light spotting of rust after nearly a year sitting neglected in it's nylon sheath.

From the charts, all AUS steels seem to have the same Cr and Ni content, so I can't imagine that, unless similarly neglected, AUS8 would be a problem, even with just a once-a-month wipe down. Therefore, I'd say 'no' to Duracoat.

BTW, are you sure about getting a SOG Flash 1? Sure, looks great in the Youtube reviews, but every single one I've tried had 'poor' to 'bad' lockup (ie: the blade wiggled). I eventually went with a Kershaw OD-2 as my 'office' EDC.

Well , the downside is that I live in a state where the blade length limit on edc knives is 2.5in., have a budget at around $60, and want a knife that has good edge retention and at least US assembled. But hey, beggars can't be choosers as they say, so I might have to look into import knives. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question guys .

I'm holding my Flash 1 (currently for sale) and the lock is solid no wiggle at all. And I've had it since 2008. I never really took to it, finally decided to put it up for sale.

Having owned a Flash 1 I can tell you that for $60 there are better knives to spend your money on. The Spyderco Dragonfly comes to mind.

Aus8 will rust, but you need to work at it. Of stainless steels, it one of the best for edge holding and corrossion resistance at a reasonable price.

If you use it often, it will be fine. If you constantly get it wet and don't wipe it down, it might develop spots. I left mine in the bathroom for about a week of showering, and it just caused a couple tiny spots near the edge. However, bead blasted or possibly even stonewashed AUS8 is way more prone to rust than a satin or mirror finish.
