So i just got a old bowie knife from my dad as a user knife. we are pretty sure the steel is 1080 carbon but we arnt positive. and i was wondering i have experience on AUS-8 8cr13mov 440 steel and i was wondering how 1080n compares in sharpening? do you guys know?

hey buddy, i would say because of the high carbon it will be a lot tougher than any of those. but i think on a rough stone you should be able to put a nice edge on it.

The 1080 I have experiance with is 1080+. That being said from my experiance aus-8 is easier to sharpen but also loses it edge faster. But if you can get a edge on aus8 you will have no problem putting a edge on the 1080. It just might take alittle lonTger to do it.

1080 is SK-5, which should hold an edge fairly well for intended puposes. It does have a leg up on a ton of other steels in the toughness department. That is some pretty tough stuff. In my experince, sharpening per inch is very easy, and it will hold an edge on par with 8cr and Aus8a, maybe not quite as well, but it all depends on heat treating. I mean its 0.8% Carbon(similar to Aus8a and 8cr) is no slouch really, and I think it is a fine steel for a solid hard-working blade.
