i just baught a timberline envoy from the snap on man for 47 bucks (regular for him is 75) even with the discount i now see that i could have gotten it much cheaper elsewhere  i normally carry a kabar for work but i figured that a small tanto blade for small work would be nice to clip on to the kabars sheeth as a backup.

my question is, how good is the aus8 steel? durability and sharpness for example. also, how good of a knife is the envoy? any problems that i should look for that could save me a finger or two later down the road?

I do not know Timberline knives, but like any other knife steel, the steel will only be as good as the heat treat. I have found that AUS-8 runs the gamut from poor to quite good.

My experiences with AUS8 have been mixed, in some CRKT knives it was poor, but in my Ka-Bar Doziers it seems much better.

it seems decent, ive put a razors edge on it with a soft stone but it seemed to easy, the edge probably wont last long.

im not a real fan of stainless steel, if it dont rust i dont normally use it but this seems like a decent knife. ive only use it for one day so far so the verdict is out on how its going to hold up under my line of work.

It depends on on the maker. CRKT Aus 8 performs ok; sharpens up pretty well but doesn't hold the edge that long. I find that SOGs Aus 8 is very good, holds an edge longer than CRKT and gets very sharp.

Here's some tests where Cliff compares identical knives with three different types of steel. AUS8 is compared against a more premium stainless, VG10 (close to AUS10 in performance), and against a very wear resistant tool steel, D2. The knives he was testing have very thin blades and so it is not surprising that he could destroy them all. The remarkable thing is how well these light-duty knives stood up to the stresses.

Jeff,
thanks for the link to cliffs knife test site it was really quiet revealing.
i was jaw on the floor about some of the things that he does to knives in the name of testing.
i was considering one of the knives he tested (sog recondo) but after reading a few things that cliff points out i`m thinking alot differently now.
again thank you, i`m amazed.
