Dependable Skeleton,

Most of the hunter-gatherer cultures who had a long time to specialize in their enviromental ranges tended to live lives with light work loads and plenty of leisure time, in times of plenty. This is particularly true of the men in those cultures.

This disingrates in times of enviromental upheveal (even a bad winter which can easily kill off a whole band or even tribe), or in the face of cultural competition from agricultual surplus based societies.

For an excellent, non technical, look at the cultural difference , find a book called "The Songlines". A great read.

Take Care,
Jeff

its a good life in many ways, but its sad to see what my country has done to the indigenous inhabitants. An even better life is those guys that TODAY live in Torres Strait (the northernmost part of Australia)- I have very fond memories of diving for crayfish, throwing a line in and eating fish with fresh chillis on the beach. What a life!

Another interesting read would be Mutant Message Down Under (it's something like that at least) about somebody who went and lived with a tribe of Aborigines in the outback.
