An interesting story today on the local news;
http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/man-lost-in-outback-loses-60kg/2006/04/13/1144521444160.html

It seems that there is absolutely no one doubt that this guy has survived for 10 weeks in a remote desert location. There does seem to be some doubt about *how* he came to be left in this dire situation. Details released by police are very sketchy, but it seems that he claims to have been bashed and left for dead on the side of an outback road, and subsequently awoke, walked, and managed to locate a dam on a cattle property (cattle properties in that part of the world are as big as Texas), but the police don't seemed convinced - however no more details are forthcoming. Regardless of how he came to be there, I'd have to say he has survived what would kill most people- his weight at the beginning was 108 kg (that's 238 pounds for you US guys) and weight when rescued was a phenomenally light 45kg (99 pounds).
He apparently survived by drinking water from the dam, and eating dam critters such as leaches, frogs and grasshoppers.

Since I weigh in at 75 kg (165 pounds), I do wonder if I were in the same position how I would have fared - if I'd lost the same amount of weight I would have only weighed 12kgs at the time of rescue!!! - I don't think so!!

No knife, no nothing, he was just lucky to find a dam and displayed real perseverance (plus he was farely hefty when he got 'caught out')!

I could stand to lose a few pounds myself maybe I should get bashed and left behind. It's a shock that he made it that long. I mean he had plenty of water but I'm sure by hearing how much weight he lost that the food was very little. I wonder what he did for shelter.....

he stated that he built a 'humpy', by which I assume he means that he built a shelter using the available vegetaion which would have been one to two foot high scrub bush. He also stated that he 'cooked' frogs by throwing them on top of siad humpy and waiting until the midday sun had made them nice and crispy. KFC anyone?...

If someone was with him he may not have lost so much wieght. Plenty of meat!!!! (sorry could not resist)

Still a lot of questions to be answered about Mr Megee.

I believe there is a lot more to this story than a simple "outback traveller loses his way".

Jury still out.

I knew there was a tactical reason to hold on to my 20 pounds of extra "energy reserves"

YOu are not wrong in this assumption.

The human body is not designed to have 3% body fat. Native peoples worldwide in temperate climates at least, always tried to mantain extra energy reserves in the form of body fat for the lean times out of their control.

This lean cut look is a modern fashion thing and is not what mother nature intended. That said an extra 100 lbs of fat on your frame has the opposite effect with major health complications.
