Spyderco, but mostly Byrd in my local knife shops.

The Byrds are going for 150-300 dollars....Spydercos, a little more than that (King of Knives, last time I was there)

I paid 200.00 for a Caly 3 about 6 months ago from another store, which given exchange rates at the time, shipping etc, was bearable.

Then theres the old fave' Chinese brands that populate the shelves of Anacondas 'cutlery section' ...clamshell packed copies of copies that command a premium for mystery steels.

One of the first pieces of advice I was given ok this forum is "stop buying from king of thieves."
Those guys will sell you a letherman wave for $200 and a spyderco centafonte3 for $270!
You're better off buying from somewhere like newgraham...unless it's Swiss army knives. Wellington surplus in Perth has fair prices on SAK's.

Anywho sorry for going off topic :o

I never buy knives from Australia. All the retailers here have ridiculous prices.
I use Knife works, Knife ship free and cutlery shoppe, as well as ebay.

Generally speaking you are far better off buying from somewhere like Newgraham. Even with exchange rates and shipping things will usually be better than any retailer in Oz, especially King of Thieves. Nobody in their right mind would buy anything from them. Even some of the Ebay sellers are more expensive.

Let me give you an example:

Spyderco Sharpmaker
Newgraham price $49.95
Shipping to Oz around $30
Total $79.95
Convert that to Oz bucks @93c = $86 approx.

Recently I saw a Sharpmaker on Ebay with a buy now price of $136 + $10 shipping.

Where are you going to buy it?

The only exception to this might be if you are worried about importing something that might have problems getting through customs.

wellington surplus has pretty much all the major brands from memory, but they are usually pretty expensive.

what are the top factory brands sold in australia?

Not sure of the purpose behind your question and I gather you are not referring to kitchen knives, but the ones I see most often in sports, camping and disposal stores etc are:
Pacific Cutlery
Schrade Old Timer
Smith & Wesson
Muela
Victorinox/Wenger
Leatherman

The KoK franchise also does overpriced Spyderco's but I have never seen Benchmade or Kershaw in Brick & Mortar stores in Oz.

You need to come to Melbourne, Antonio :)

Not always the cheapest prices available but there is some good eye candy at Frank O' Reilly's Sports, 869 High St THORNBURY VIC - It is primarily a gun shop but they have Fallkies, CRK, Spydies, BMs, Svord, CS, Ontario RAT, Buck, SOG, Puma and others (??I think I have seen Kershaw there too). Pleasant to deal with. No website that I am aware of.

New Graham shipped to me recently without problems and most of us are aware that they have a good range.

Okie 46 - this is the second forum I've seen you ask about knife brands in Oz. You planning on sending us some steel in the mail?? :D

+1 for Urban Conquest, he has the best prices and can get most anything. Cutting edge knives is also worth supporting and he has a large range of gear from Al Mar to ZT. I occasionally get stuff from NGK and they are very good price wise but it usually costs around $30usd postage, but importing is becoming a real PITA what with the Customs wankers checking everything and interpreting the laws their own way

I shipped a Sharpmaker to Helsinki and it only cost $13 US dollars . The guy let me take it out of the package and he saved a ton on postage. That was using US postal service. If its not a gift and your not going to resell it this is a cheaper way to go.

How big is the sharp maker package compared to the actual sharp maker?
