Austria knife laws

I did a search and found 2 threads discussing this topic, but neither had solid facts.

I'll be in Austria for work and wouldn't want to unknowingly get into any trouble. From what I've read you can carry a knife concealed or not as long as it doesn't look like a harmless object. Can anyone back this up?

Thanks

I wrote this same email to two different embassies. I will post the replies next.

Hello,

I will be traveling to Austria and would like to know the local laws regarding pocket knives. My main questions are:

Is there a size limit?
Is there a limitation on locking pocket knives?
Can you carry the knife inside a pocket?

A link to all of the Austrian laws would be very helpful too. Thank you in advance for your attention.

Regards,

Edgar

The first embassy just copied and pasted what I believe is from Wikipedia. It sounds good, but I never use Wikipedia as a source of info, at least not the only source.

"Thank you for your email; this is the only information I have found on knives perse:
Austria
In accordance with the Austrian Arms Act of 1996 (Waffengesetz 1996) it is illegal to buy, import, possess or carry weapons that are disguised as another object or as an object of common use (sword canes, e.g., or knives disguised as ink pens, brush handles or belt buckles).[2] Certain other types of weapons, namely blackjacks, steel rods and brass knuckles are completely forbidden as well.[3] The law further provides that certain bladed weapons such as push daggers are either prohibited or require a special license.[4][5] There are no restrictions or prohibitions based on blade length, and automatic opening knives (switchblades), OTF automatic knives, balisongs, and gravity knives are implicitly permitted under the Arms Act.[4][5] All bladed weapons that are not specifically prohibited or restricted may be bought, possessed and carried by anyone over the age of 18[6] who has not been forbidden from doing so by the civilian authorities.[7]
I hope it helps you.

This is the second reply I got from a different embassy:

"I really don’t know. There is some information here. I cannot guarantee that this is correct.

Here is the link to the limited information about Austrian laws in English. https://www.ris.bka.gv.at/defaultEn.aspx

I think it is best you do not travel with any larger pocket knives. If you need to know details, you may need to pay for a legal service.
