I have never owned an auto knife. How safe is it? Is it likely to open in your pocket? Is there a safty switch etc to make it safe? Can it still be opened one handed without the auto function? How easy is it to strip? How long does the spring last? Is it worth the extra over a manual LCC?

Whew!

Thanks!

Wayne....auto's are about as safe as a manual in my opinion. I have only heard of a few rare instances where they opened in someon's pocket. Most auto's do NOT have a safety switch except the Benchmade's and the MT CTII's. There are probably a few other's that I am not aware of. All the Prot-ech Autos do not have safety's on them. Is the DA-LCC worth the extra money over the manual..hard to say......both perform the same as far as cutting goes, it would just depend if you really want the gadget factor. Unless the autos you buy are actually "double-action", then they can only be opened via the button or bolster. For instance....the MOD autos have a thumb-stud but can still only be opened via "auto" because they are not designed for double action.

I just received my LCC/DA, and I have been wondering some of the same things myself.

This thing is a tank. I wanted the auto for the gadget factor,(and the micarta handles) which is really neat, but the knife still works just fine using the thumbstuds.

It's pretty easy on mine to just nudge the bolster down, and the blade flies open. I can't really see how it would fire unintentionally in my pocket.

My only concern is that I'll dry-fire the spring accidentally after the knife has been manually opened. I don't want to cause any damage to the mechanism, but it seems like it might be possible with the right combination of grip, squeeze, or twist that the bolster could be triggered. I've read that that's not a very good thing.

I'd like to hear if any other LCC D/A owners have accidently dry fired the knife while in use from their grip.

Other than that- it seems pretty safe to tote around to me.

To answer your question FireBat....yes......it seems there is some inconsistency with this taking place on DA-LCC's. It seems MT is continually improving on them to eliminate this problem tho.
