as far as the sale and possession of auto knives go up here it's grey and sketchy for sure. I know of two shops that sell to "Police, Military, and State certified Rescue Personnel" (I'm rescue)
about another three shops sell to Police and Military only.
Word on the street is that no State Trooper, or Police officer is going to care what kind of knife you carry as long as it's not sticking out from between someones ribs or something. Especially if your law enforcement, military, or rescue.
So, I've been carrying all sorts of autos the last few years Pro-Tech, Microtech, Benchmade, Dalton, etc. Used them around cops who didn't say a word, and it's really never been much of an issue. When I was a hospital security officer, no one blinked at my MT Socom Elite because I used good common sense when using it. It's just never come up as an issue before, inspite of the fact that by letter of the law, it IS illegal for me to have.
Yesterday my wife and I were checking out a couple of defensive handgun courses and talking to a really nice guy that comes highly recommended when it comes to handgun training, really knowledgeable guy supposedly when a guy comes in from the local military base and asks if they stock Benchmade Autos or can order them.
The gentleman that had been previously making a really good impression on me looks up and gets this dark, horrid look to his eye and replies "it's a FELONY for ANYONE except police and military in Alaska to possess a switchblade, and we don't sell them to ANYBODY except for them. We do this for YOUR protection, because we don't want you guys to have to face these on the street" (and what are us EMT's, A**hole, chopped liver???) Basically the general BS elitist society can't be trusted crap. At least I can feel warm and cozy knowing he'd sell me an AR-15, M-1A National Match Rifle, or a fully customized 1911....
At this point I very politely intervened and directed the guy to my friend Ray at Northern Knives who carries a wide selection of autos, and HAS A FLIPPIN' CLUE!!!!!
Okay...so at this point it's obvious that this guy is a baffoon when it comes to knives and laws. It's NOT a felony to have an auto, auto mechanisms are no more dangerous than any other one handed knife, a street thug is NOT going to carry a $300 Microtech LCC, etc, so I won't bother getting into the discussion of how insipid this guys views and information are. I'll simply say VERY insipid and leave it at that.
So, anyhow....that's gotten me to thinking of all of the moronic, idiotic crap I've heard from otherwise intelligent people, and I'm starting to think it might be a heck of alot safer to not carry an auto at all. there's just too much misinformation and ignorance out there to brave that gauntlet. Sure, 99 out of a hundred troopers I'll encounter and deal with could care less, but there's always gonna be that one gung-ho wet behind the ears rookie that wants to save the world by taking away my automatic folding knife and giving a well meaning, harmless guy a criminal record.
Thing is I LIKE my automatics. they're fun, they're unique!, they're incredibly handy!
I also HATE buying a manual version of a knife that is available in an automatic configuration. Same way I feel about having 10 round PC mags shoved down my throat. I feel that I'm buying a product that's NOT living up to it's full potential. and for what reason?? It pisses me off to no end that I should pay the price for gross friggin' ignorance.
Carrying a manual knife....call it a CQD for example on duty instead of the auto that I LOVE is like sand in my jockey shorts, and I hate having this senseless PC BS crammed down my throat.
Anyways I'm debating whether to give up my autos and carry a much less dangerous knife (SIFU?)
in order to appease the people I normally encounter, or whether I'm going to carry what I darn well please, ignorance, misinformation and elitism, and asinine laws be damned.
Sorry if this post got kind longish and didn't go anywhere. Just needed a good venting where I know it'll be understood.
