Just got this, quite nice really. Interesting to see such a high end blade steel in an inexpensive Zytel lockback, the ones I had seen before were mentioned to be 440A or AUS-6.

Even the catalog that came with it does not show this version. Was this an option only for a short time perhaps?

The only BG-42 Autoclips I knew of had Americanized Tanto blades and were called X-42 Autoclips. I have a Racing Red Varient. Good luck finding information. I hope someone comes along that can help.

We did a small run of the original AutoClip knives with BG-42 steel around 2000. The first ones we did were the tanto versions and then we did some of the clip point blades, like pictured above. I don't know how many we did but they were done shortly before discontinuing the original versions around 2004.

Nice find!

Cheers fellas!

Good steel, I'm liking it plenty as it got really nice and sharp with just a few passes on the Sharpmaker Ultrafine rods. Also the edge bevel is properly acute, maybe 25 degrees, so I didn't have to reprofile it all. Just put a 30-degree microbevel and final edge on it and it's good to go.

Not too bad for about thirty bucks. :)

 Thirty bucks for a BG-42 knife! You made a killing!

You will love that BG-42 steel as it will take and hold a very fine edge. Congrats on the find.

It's sad to me that we don't see more Zytel lockbacks with high end steel. The Autoclip is a great knife. I love one-piece Zytel lockbacks and I always have some sadness about the fact that they seem to only fill the niche of budget knives these days. There are precious few that really come in a high end package. I would love to see SOG bring out a Zytel lockback with a higher end steel like 154CM, S30V, or BG-42. I know I would be in for a couple.

Sorry to get so off topic, great find on that one.

I agree, would like to see more Zytel/FRN handled lockbacks with nice steel. Sure G10 and Micarta are nice, but they cost a ton more. Give me a good basic handle IE Zytel or FRN and AUS8 or better (IMO 154CM or BG-42) and I'm happy. Then the expence is in the blade which is the most important thing. SOG's BG-42 is really good. I would know, my X-42 autoclip has held up great over the years. That blade gets scary sharp and holds it for a long time! :D
