I'm in Missouri and am looking at a knife for sale in Canada. The knife is an automatic. Is it legal to purchase an automatic knife from Canada and have it shipped to my house?

-This purchase is through a private party, not a dealer.

-Will there be issues when crossing the USA/Canada border?

Any advice will be helpful.

Mike

It is illegal for sure! Contra band as per Customs ( now ICE). The law posted above deals with inter state commerce, but these are banned for import to the US via Customs laws and even parts are banned for import.

So chances are it's likely to be "caught" and I will be out of luck -no refund of money or no knife either?

Could I have it shipped to a dealer?

No, shipping to a dealer is simply a way to skirt inter-state restrictions. Import is straight up illegal, no exceptions (save official contract with the military.) I should warn you that while the federal regs are almost never enforced on inter-state sale, I know for a fact they have been enforced on imports many times. As in, a person in the US who was importing autos was prosecuted.

Given that as an automatic it is straight up illegal in Canada, they wouldn't be sending it back either, and possibly charging the seller with an offense. Not sure what, but sale of a prohibited weapon or something. The only work around I could think of would be if the knife had some antique or historic value, and you were legal to own it, There may be a way to permit it, but that would require a lot of work.

I wasn't aware autos were illegal in Canada. In Missouri they are legal. This seems like more trouble than it's worth.
