Automatic vs Quartz Movement?

Why would you choose one over the other? Different application, different movement maybe?

Are there any other important movements I should know about?

Thanks!

A quartz will keep great time...an auto might not.
I prefer an auto as you have a little machine on your wrist - not an electronic gadget.
An auto watch has more soul....

Does that sound mental? :(

My quartz watches are great time keepers, nice "appliances". My one Seiko diver automatic is pretty cool. Like Steven said, it's a little machine on your wrist that has more soul. The 7S26 automatic movement which is in my watch is well regarded as being accurate and durable.

Pick one and enjoy it, better yet get one of each. :)

Go here for some good information on automatics.

I own and wear both. My automatics are my "good" watches, my quartz are my "beaters".
There is also the hand-wound mechanicals. I have an old hand-wound Timex that's still ticking....
Quartz will keep more accurate time and take more abuse.

I like them both. Sometimes, its just easier to be able to pick up a quartz watch and not worry about having to charge it enough. When you get 5 or 6 automatics (or more!) trust me, it can be a big headache. Quartz watches will also always keep better time than even the highest beat automatics. My accutron and omega have lost maybe a second every two months.
