Autonomy Info?

So I know the new auto, the Autonomy is forthcoming in the not so distant future, I'm out on my boat a lot this time of year and the idea of a light, rust resistant auto to carry in my shorts really appeals to me. I do have a few questions I have not been able to find definitive answers to though so here goes...Also, I should mention up front that carry and possession of autos is perfectly legal in Texas so that's not an issue.

1) Is there going to be a plain edge version? The Spyderedge is a fine setup, but I prefer plain edges to serrations. I realize that the model they are introducing is serrated because of it being intended for use on ropes and the like, but a properly sharpened plain edge will cut just as well, and let's be honest I'm not exactly fishing the Bearing Sea either. About the toughest thing it's going to cut is the plastic off a six pack.

2) I read somewhere that there is going to be an orange handled version with no clip? I cannot find where I read that now...anyone know?

3) Are these going to be stocked in dealers or be a special order only item? I know some US makers like Benchmade routinely stock autos in their dealers in states where they are legal (which they are here in TX).

Thanks for the info.

While not official answers, I do like the offerings in the automatics by Spyderco.

If the blade is H1, the serrated edge will hold an edge longer (work hardened instead of heat treated). The plain edge H1 knives do not offer great edge retention, luckily they are easy to sharpen and if you like sharpening frequently it might be ideal.

The knife was designed for the US Coast Guard, that might be where the orange handles talk came from. It might be limited to them, not a lot of info has been revealed about this model. Kristi had mentioned the Coast Guard and orange in the past I believe.

I would guess they will be in stock at the regular stores that sell autos. It shouldn't be a hard to get item once released.

I don't have much info either but i am sitting with the 2014 OpFocus catalog in front of me and the only model they are showing in here is a DLC coated H1 version with wire clip.

Hi John,

There are two versions. The Coasat Guard version has a orange handle, no safety and no clip.
The "regular" version will have a black handle with a safety and clip.
Plain edge version is not available at this time.
They should be shipping in the next few weeks to our dealers that carry autos.

I guess I lied on the deliverfy schedule. It's goind to take longer than I thought. Kristi should chime in soon with more info on delivery dates.

Why would they not want a clip?

They go into a special pocket and don't need a clip.

We are currently building the orange Autonomy for the USCG and will be meeting with them soon to finalize details of delivery. Once we successfully meet the needs of the USCG we will determine if and how we would potentially release the orange Autonomy to Dealers/Distributors who service the military.

The current ETA for the all black Autonomy is this fall.

Thanks for the replies and info Sal, Kristi and others...I guess it's going to have to wait until next summer until I get my hands on one for boat use though sadly. By the way, I really hope you do release the orange handled version for dealer sale, my closest local dealer is right near a military base.

In the meantime, I bought a Tasman Salt the other day, SE version. I like it, but I wish it were about 30% larger in every direction.

You might want to look around for a Spyderhawk Salt. Not precisely 30% larger, but close. They've been out of production for a while but they still show up occasionally on the secondary market.

Yea I have, no luck finding one though. From the specs I read on it, it would be pretty much perfect, too bad its discontinued.

Any word on the civilian version hitting the market? I called a dealer that is right near a military installation today and they had no idea.

EDIT: I'm referring to the orange handled, no safety/clip version being sold rather than just provided to USCG personnel.
