Alright, with the debut of the Emerson Triton Auto, two questions beg to be asked.

#1 Anything with an exposed button is like plain, vanilla ice cream now. Yeah, I know, some of us like vanilla, but most of us like some variety.

There is not just the "Slick Trick Factor," of the Covert, Double/Action Automatics. Covert is, in my opinion and that of many, many others...simply the way to go now for a variety of reasons, all of them valid.

While the Bolster Release has been popularized by the MT LCC D/A and the hidden under clip or panel Release by the Vallotton & MT-Vallotton Chameleons, and the screw Release by Darrel Ralph and Larry Chew [although separate designs], the Scale Release can be incredibly Covert and having an Aluminum Body, the Triton would simply shake the Knife Community as a Double Action Scale Release.

Of course, I don't know how to accomplish that with a Coil Spring-Fired Auto, nor do I know if it is possible at all. It might only be possible with a Leaf Spring. Meaning, the Design of the Triton would have to be altered.

#2 Mr. Emerson's First Knife was a Balisong Knife. Since he is now delving into the Limited Auto Market, why not design and produce a Balisong Knife? A knife which would have a much wider market. Look at the Balisong Forum right here at Bladeforums. Use it as a Marketing Tool. Something Microtech would not do.

There is so much room for new designs in this field. And the Balisong Knife is having a massive new re-birth starting, RIGHT NOW.

It is a difficult knife to do well.

Emerson takes so much heat for various things, but one thing cannot be denied, this was Ernest Emerson's first knife he ever made, and if someone cannot see pure talent, that's their problem.

Hmm, a Rhino bladed bali? Well it might be impossible to make. How about a Commander style bali?
If there is an Emerson Balisong in the future, it should have a unique Ernest Emerson style blade. Something really wicked.

The problem with blade width would come into play. The edge cannot go below the level of a line drawn straight out from the Kick on a Balisong.

If you do not know what the "Kick" is on a Balisong Knife, Click here for Chuck Gollnick's Terminology Page.

Now, a "Sandwich Style" Balisong, I think, can allow for a bit more blade width as opposed to the milled, solid handle.

The Kick prevents the edge from banging the inside of the handle. It is a Protector of the edge.

I would think the Viper with a false edge would be cool, or perhaps a full double edged Viper-like design.

Since I haven't been able to own a Bali since the early eighties, I've lost touch with that segment of the market. I even get down right depressed when I lurk in the Bali forum, because they're illegal in my state.

Thus, My question: What's driving the re- birth of the Bali market?

I thought the stupid knife laws had criminalized the style in the high population states. However, the better makers seem to see viable sales potential.

Did I miss something?

Can i get a B...Can i get an A...Can i get an L...Can i get an I...BALI!! BALI!! BALI!! BALI!!

Months ago I asked for a bali and was told it was a dumb idea, and after some abuse, asked to have the thread closed. Well, just after i asked for it to be closed, a few guys posted strong support, so i guess thats what i get for not just letting it role out and play.

Well, I'm still here as a general lurker, but I'd be game.

Pelle was the one ragging on Balisong Owners, don't take it out on the rest of The Suspects Friend...there are a few of us that are rabid Balisong Manipulators in here, and in any event, I'm sure that most people who frequent this Forum would not act as Pelle did.

Don, I consider you a friend, and more often than not you make me proud to be a Suspect, but damnit I sometimes hate that you spark the fire within my desire to tell it as I feel it. But as Usual, here goes;

The new Emerson auto "Triton" is inspirational only in the way in which it inspires "trite" opinions. So perhaps the name IS appropriate.
The Triton is bland at best. Actually it's unattracive, very mediocre in execution, and mildly disappointing by design. Ernie, the obvious format for an auto is the Commander. Make it the worlds first true hidden release tri-action auto. You can thumb it open, you can wave it open, OR you can auto open it via covert release, preferably bolster, but scale would suffice. This would be a winner. Otherwise, why bother entering the auto market at all?
As for Balis? Man, your first knife was a bali. Go up against Turber and MT and create an Emersonesque piece! It would be soooooo easy to create a bali with genuine Emerson flavor.
Alternative number 2 is to do a bali collaboration with Fred Perrin. Perrin Balis are a PAIN to acquire, but I suffer through it because they're some of the best in the world from a true practitioner standpoint. Fred makes ingenious USER balis, and this to me is far more important than an "art bali". Get with Fred, design a fighters bali, and you'd never be able to make enough of them. It would exceed the success of the Griffe many times over.
Nuf said.

Eric,

Well, I was tap-dancin' in a minefield, and you just came on out stompin' hahahahahaha.

The General Idea was, the body and blade was OK to me, but the exposed button that screams, "I'm an Auto!" was just...well, it has been done.

The Bolster Release, I'm getting a feel for things after the Ti-Body Commander Episode went down, is not going to be looked at with much favor because the MT LCC D/A is a Bolster Release. Since no one but Custom Makers, to my knowledge, is using a scale release and the body would be Aluminum, I figured that would be a better way to go...

As for the Wave...if the knife was a Bolster or Scale Release, I don't know that it could be Waved open Eric. The shock of the Wave Opening might fire the spring anyway, IF, if the knife had to have a Leaf Spring...

Now, if you can do a Scale Release with a Coil Spring...heh heh heh...

As for the idea of a Balisong, the sky is the limit. If you're going to make an Auto, you can't really say, "We cannot make a Balisong because we're in California..." As far as I can tell anyway. Worst Case Scenario is, they cannot ship to California Dealers...

Guys

Not to throw a wet blanket on the party, but . . . .

Might I point out that MTs first autos were the UDT, a buttoned SA coil fired auto.

They are still working out the whole "Made in California" issue with the Triton. At this point they still may not be able to market the knife to the public . . . at all . . in any State. I gave Derek a few ideas for their Legal Department that may get them around that issue. I'll keep them between us at this point.

I hate to bring up the "G" word because of out little "E" buddy, but at this point I really see an Emerson auto as a gimmick. Why have an auto? Quick, single handed deployment of a knife? Is it quicker that "the wave"? I think not.

I carry around an LUDT2001 on my support side as a utility knife. But it's due to the blade shape . . . the fact that it's an auto actually takes away from the design at this point. If EKI made a waved CQC7A, I'd carry one.

All that having been said, a "Triple Action" Commander that was scale fired would be the Cat's Ass.

Would I like to see an EKI Bali? Ehhhhh . . . OK, whatever. See my comments on "Quick, single handed opening" above. Sorry guys. (If they made a Bali, I'd have to have one)

Just my thoughts. Popular or not.

John

I think the release should be a button that looks like a machine screw. Just my two pesos

John,

I have heard of something being..."The Cat's Meow..." But something being "The Cat's Ass" is troubling to me...

Well if you can't make them in CA, I'll lend you some of my camping gear, and you could bring some of the milling machines and other nice fancy tools over to my place, and we could make them here.

I'm sure that my parrents wouldn't notice

Preach on Brother Don!!!
IMHO, Autos are ok, but I LOVE the design and handiness of hidden release DAs, why have an auto when you can have both in the DA??? As you know, Balisongs and Hidden release DAs are two of my biggest knife loves, a soft spot so to speak. (the other thing being anything from EKI especially with a wave) Now, the Emerson Auto is nice, but I probably would not get, keep carry, etc., one for a long time, I would just prefer a waved Emerson. But if the made a Hidden release DA auto, I would buy several of the, and carry one!!! Now if Earnie could design a triple action knife, there would be no stopping him!!! I also think that Emerson should get on the ball and make a balisong!!! It would have so much potential that its immeasurable. Hopefully Mr. Emerson (or at least on of his associates ***HINT, HINT: DEREK) will see this thread and make our dreams, desires and fantasy a reality!!!

Thanks,
