Autos in New York State (not NYC)

I know this has probably been gone over numerous times, but I get the impression Bruen may have changed things a bit?

From what I can find with casual research, it seems that automatic knives are legal to carry in NY while hunting or fishing. But other parts of the law describe them as "dangerous knives" or something like that, and they are not legal to possess or carry. I haven't found an online retailer who will ship an auto to NY.

Did the Bruen decision change anything in NY state like it did in Hawaii? It should have changed a lot of NY firearms laws, but they flagrantly ignored the Bruen decision and made them even worse. Will it require a court decision to make the Bruen case apply to NY knife laws?

I'm happy with my knife collection other than the fact it's missing an OTF I'd like to have...

I would imagine it would be illegal to breath in N.Y.C. Some states allow switchblades to be possessed in the home but illegal to walk around with. Believe Ma. is one of them unless one has a Class A weapons permit.

Really don’t know how you could legally obtain an auto in New York. You could come down to Pennsylvania where they’re legal and purchase one at a gun shop and bring it back. Of course, I’d make sure it was stashed some place in the trunk of your car where it can’t be seen or easily accessed. Just having a fishing or hunting license isn’t enough to get you off the hook if you’re seen with it in public. You would have to have some gear with you showing you were going to or coming from a fishing trip. As far as I know, Bruen really hasn’t been applied to knife laws yet. Knife Rights has been working on some litigation challenging the Federal Switchblade Act and California’s knife laws. We’ll have to wait and see where that goes.

I don't know how far upstate you are but JT's knifeshop in port jervis is a great one that has autos - I don't know their shipping policies but you can always call and ask if that's too far out for you

I'm 200 miles north, but does the fact they sell autos mean something changed about the NY knife laws? Or is there a "for purchase by law enforcement only" kind of loophole?

Just keep the rod and tackle box in the car. Some of my best fishing trips have been those impromptu 20 kill half an hour ordeals.

It really depends on the cop, my FIL is still convinced they're illegal because you can put it against someone to impale them with it. Despite my making him repeatedly read the exemption for hunting/trapping/fishing.

How he can justify that ignorance and in the same breath refuse to enforce the SAFE act gobbledygook is beyond me.

One of these days I'm going to take one to a family function just to prove a point.

As for getting them, they're not illegal to possess here, so depending on the dealer, they do get shipped here.

As far as I can tell, JT seems to be selling autos to anybody who wants them. It might be because the cops in Port Jervis really don’t care as much about enforcing the knife laws.

Sounds like the guy is watching too many movies. You need to demonstrate to him that they aren’t capable of doing that.

Agreed, not that I really fancy deliberately poking myself with a microtech, but in the name of the hobby I should.

Just have to find room in the budget to procure one...🤷‍♂️

I don't know if any of you guys remember a place called something like "The Arizona Knife Company" that skirted knife laws by selling auto knife kits back in the day. I bought an OTF kit when I was in WashDC in the Navy in the '80s. I'll be darned if i can find the thing... it's still around somewhere.

It had nice, strong double action but horrible fit/finish and blade play (by design; not because of my assembly skills!). I often demonstrated the fact that it was safe to activate when up against my body but was paranoid enough to sure to be wearing a heavy layer or two of clothing when I did the demonstrating.

As some what stated above, NYS PL 265.20#6 Allows for the possession of switchblades' for use while fishing/hunting/trapping. In the Knife Rights case in NY the DA admits a gravity knife or switchable is legal under those conditions. Most officers do not know of this list of exceptions.

I have a lifetime sportsmans license. Good for huntin' and fishing which I'm doing all the time if anyone's asking😜.......Or going to and coming from which I'm doing the rest of the time.....Plenty of places ship here....
A lot don't though... Ignorance I suppose........ Where there's a will there's a way......

I do have some hunting and fishing knives I bought from a knife auction site years ago. And I happen to be a life-long hunter and fisherman with the appropriate licenses

Bob.
