Autumn Fires

Man... this time of year is so rough! All through the last storms of the summer I labor away clearing the downed limbs from the yard and dragging them into the edge of the woods around the fire pit out back. And then now.... as the leaves start covering the yard good...it is my duty, as father and husband, to sacrifice my weekends and evenings in order to go out and labor in the yard. So of course this means I must grudgingly leave the comfort of my dwelling and venture forth out into the elements and wilderness that is my yard to toil away playi... err... I mean working with sharp and pointy pieces of steel as I cut up all the brush. Knowing the whole time that all of this toiling will only lead to several piles of twigs, pieces of limbs, and chopped branches, and yet another chore for myself that I won't be able to leave undone. Obviously I will have to dispose of said piles, which of course means I will have to perform the dreaded task of building a fire. And thus...so goes the afternoon and even on into the evening I work....raking leaves, gathering twigs, putting wood on the fire and moving piles of debris. All the while having to deal with the horrible atmospheric conditions produced by a slight breeze, an azure blue sky, and the harshness of the sixty-something temps. The hours pass by dreadfully slowly and still too soon the sun is going down. So naturally now I am stuck out here because the largest of the logs are now burning and taking their sweet time at it. So now I'm not allowed go inside, oh no, I am forced to take my rest outside... sitting on the moonlight-dappled ground watching the fire burn. And so for at least an hour and a half, maybe even two whole hours, I have to endure this torture with no other sounds to comfort me but only the crackles and pops issuing forth from the fire pit, the rustle of the leaves falling through the branches, and the sounds of the Screech Owls calling to each other from the ridge tops.

My but how I do soooooo love Autumn!!

Here are some pics from my weekend out in the back yard. Anybody else had a fire in the pit yet?

Should have known a Mistwalker thread would be full of great pics!! Beautiful this time of year isnt it? Is that huge monster with the orange scales the warthorn? (like i need any more knives! right?)

Thanks guys, glad you like the pics.

Great pics Ray, hopefully soon I'll have some friends over for an evening around the fire but I timed this one just right so I could sit alone watching the full moon rise and enjoy the fire in peace and relative silence...or at least in the absence of human voices...and meditate a while. It was a spiritual time for me.

I look forward to seeing more fire pit pics.

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed them.

That's Bryan's Mega Warthorn that I have on loan to try out and study. I need to send it back to him but couldn't resist giving it a good workout first since the opportunity arose.

Reminds me of yesterday when I got home and my dad had a giant fire with a ton of leaves on top of it. I am glad I don't live in the city. Would have gotten in trouble with the size of it. :o

Well...technically I live in the city, but at the far edge of it. My back property line is actually the city/county line. I'm glad I don't live over in the city proper...I'd go nuts.

my internet is down but I took some 600 fall photos this weekend, including a bedding wolfpack that I accidentally walked into (didn't know whether to start shooting my .357 or my camera... opted for the camera) and about 6 foxes chasing around a domestic cat in the foothills. Can't wait to get em up. Missed the beautiful sunset tonight because like a tool I was takin care of some crap on my computer, but I have celebrated fall to the N'th degree so far, and will continue to do so until the snow sticks.

Great stuff mistwalker! I still hate raking leaves. I decided its best to just set the mower the lowest position and mulch them. Its kind of hilarious, because my neighbhor then goes over the blow line between our lots and sucks up the little leaf flakes away with his leaf vacuum. Then again, he dumps fertilizer on his lawn every year and I don't - the leaves simply are returning all the nutrients back to the ground.

I have a major collection of fall pics going, this is my favorite season of all.

Those are cool pic's .What is the square stack of fire bricks for?

Thanks Ken, glad you enjoyed it. I guess I'm just funny...I hate mowing the grass but I love raking the leaves....I guess because I love this season and being out in it. I turn my leaves in compost piles in the woods behind the house.

Nice pics - there's something about fire that just makes you want to relax and enjoy it.

Once again you've come through with great pics, Mist. Dunno why, but I especially like the color of the second one down. All good though.
