this might be very basic for alot of people here.

Autumnal Equinox

Every time September rolls around I get this alarm in my head. “Winter is coming” “Winter is coming” Prepare for the cold! Emergency preparations are more necessary than in the summer. Yeah, emergencies happen in the summer but the weather is more than bearable and food growing in nature is more accessible. In the winter a miscalculation can be seriously uncomfortable or even deadly.

This years prediction from the Farmer’s Almanac is the winter is going to be harsh. Last year’s winter was really mild. Either way I always make sure I have extra food (Always check the dates and conditions of stored food) FEMA recommends every house hold have at least 3 days worth of food water and toiletries in case of power outages and or being snowed in. I might be a geeky boy scout but I check the condition of my winter boots, jacket etc. This is also the time I recondition those items. Why wait till there is a snow storm?

The Fall down here in northern MS breeds a lot of tornadoes. Definitely something to look out for. MS has the highest tornado deaths in the USA. Get in tune with your areas weather characteristics. Which will help you prepare for the specific needs you might have. If your area has been susceptible to floods then you might want to consider a watercraft of some sort. Think about moving valuables that are on ground floors. At the risk of making fun of people who have lost things during a reoccurring natural disasters, it always amazes me that people who live in a known flooding region are interviewed on the news, they always talk about how sad they are to have lost everything. If you know you live in an area that floods it might be best to move your valuables to a place where the flood won’t get at it. I am talking about being proactive. A little fore thought goes along way.

This winter I will try to add to my knowledge of edible wild plants. Maybe even build a bamboo shelter. It is good to Think about projects that you can do during the winter. Try to adapt to winter before winter happens. So you aren’t one of those people on the news that says I can’t believe this happened to me. Sure FREAK accidents happen to a lot of people but there is a big difference between a FREAK accident and an accident that occurs yearly in your area.

When going hiking or hunting in the winter always grab a bunch of extra tinder and stuff it into your pockets, this will assist your mini-kit in fire starting. If it rains and everything gets wet you will have plenty of tinder to start damp kindling. Another aspect of thinking ahead if your kit only has a few cotton balls which is enough under normal conditions but in winter it is colder so it will take a higher temperature to start a good fire so have extra tinder. Also it is a great time to go over your survival books and remind your self of necessary skills you might of put on the back of your mind during the easy summer.

Autumn is that season which is the buffer between summer and winter which gives you prep time to get ready.

good luck
