Avalanche AO Mechanism???

Hello All, I just recently purchased an AVALANCHE. It's an Awsome knife and have carried for a while now. My question is this .......Is there a way to "disengage" the AO mechanism??? Don't get me wrong, I love the "Speed Safe", but I'd rather have this particular model just as a manual opener. I really like this knife. The reason is this, I'm an LEO and had an incident with a blade opening in my pocket during a foot pursuit. Luck for me it opened and turned to the outside rather than turning in .......that would've been a REAL BAD NIGHT!!! I'd rather not have that happen with this knife if possible. Any feedback is welcome. Thank You For Listening.

Hello Rook,

Welcome to the forum!

I'm not that familiar with the Avalanche, but I was wondering if it had a tip lock similar to the Leek. That would solve your problem.

If there's no sliding lock pin on the handle, then your only option is to disable the SpeedSafe. Simply take the knife apary and remove the torsion bar. It's not that hard to do, and I believe there's a ball detent already on the blade that would help to keep it closed.

If you're looking for a good locking SpeedSafe, I'd suggest the Boa. The Boa has a sliding lock along the spine of the handle that will keep it closed while the SpeedSafe remains on at all times. Your other possible option are the Cyclones. They have an "on/off" roller switch on the handle spine that merely turns the knife to a manual flipper. Both are sturdy enough to handle the tasks you will put it thru.

I wish I could be of more help, but that's about all I know. Someone with an Avalanche will be able to answer your question more accurately.

I had an Avalanche. I gave it to my son, now it's MIA.
It doesn't have a safety. But on to the question of removing the torsion bar:
If you remove it, I think the odds of it opening while running would be greater
then if you just left the torsion bar in. It doesn't have very much of a detent
(if memory serves me) to hold the blade in that well. You can always take the
torsion bar out and try it that way and if it doesn't hold well, put it back in.
# 6 and # 8 torx for taking it apart. Make sure you have the blade in the open
position when taking it apart.

Hope that helps a little.

would tightening the pivot screw work like it does on my leek? Makes it tighten up and you need to use the thumbstud and two hands to open.

I'm sure it would. I just wouldn't over tighten...could mess the washers up
over time.

Hey Gentlemen, Thanks You All A TON ;). You've been a tremendous help. I'll try and pull the torsion bar out and experiment a bit. I have a Chive, Storm PE, and 3 Mini Cyclones ...all PE. I love the Mini Cyclones and they are really durable. I just love the feeling of the G-10 in hand that the Avalanche has. This knife just has a really nice feel to it. Again, Thank You All Much. Take Good Care and Be Safe Always.

God Bless :)

ROOK...welcome!

If you like the feel of the Avalanche's G10 handle along with the overall feel of the knife, you'd probably also like Kershaw's Lahar. A little bigger, but a great knife! As a bonus, it's manual (not A/O) right out of the box.
