Most of mine (I have 16 forged fixed blades) have blades in the three to five inch range. My Big knife (Persian style blade in 1095 with Japanese style clay tempering and wavy hamon) is just shy of eight inches blade, 13.5 overall. I have no reason to carry and use that one, or any other knife with a blade longer than about 6 inches.

Oops (note to self: read more carefully), optimum and average OAL length between 8 to 10 inches. Still undecided about my next knife, but probably in the 10 to 12 inch OAL range. Sorry for my confusion.

Mine are all in the 10-12" OAL range. With the exception of a couple of fighters they are all outdoor knives, I don't carry knives for defensive reasons, purely utilitarian purposes.

I seem to have a preference for the knives in the 10" overall range the most for one reason or antoher. Seems to be a good balance between get a reasonable amount of blade without feeling like your carrying a sword around.

Average is about 5" but that's just three fixed blades. My next two will be around 9" each.

Oops, just realized we're talking about OAL. In that case my current average is about 9-10" and my next two will be around 14".

No more than 8-9" overall. Mainly, I use my fixed bladed knives for cleaning game(mostly deer) and have found that I like the shorter blades/knives for this purpose.

My big knives are 14" and 17" oal, with blades 9 1/2 and 11 1/2.

Small knives overall 7"

I've enough large bladed knives and have a Talonite Cetan Hawkbill on order with Rob, a long wait....

Hey Lynn,

The knives that my brother and I make range from 6 inches OA to 15 OA. We have done swords up to 32 inches OA and we have made some knives 4 1/2 OA.

The knives that sell for us are generally 6 to 12 inches total length. We don't seem to move a lot that are bigger.

My next knife will be a 6 to 7 inch dagger out of one piece of cable damasscus. Completly hand filed.

Hope this gives you an idea.

Phillip,
Sounds like we have similar customers. Actually my best seller is 7.25" overall ("Patrolman") and my next best seller is my "Tracker" at 8.75" overall. I'm hoping to get an idea on what to put the most effort into making for stock, as far as size goes, over the coming months. This thread has been a great help so far.

Thanks,

Blade length is about 3-3 1/2" w/ 7-8" OA. I may get another small broad blade but most likely I'll get a 4" or larger perhaps 10" OA for harder utility work or such. I'm thinking of chopping or cutting rough materials like carpet.

Most of mine are in the 8 to 9 inch range, my 1X30 can't handle any more than that

Most of my fixed blades have around 4" blades, with high-performance grinds on them. I use 'em as camp and utility knives. The 3.75" and 4.25" fixed blades on your site Lynn are exactly the kind of knives I love.

My next fixed blades, I'm looking for a fighting bowie, and a camp bowie. For both knives, I favor a high-performance edge geometry over something overly thick. A full flat or convex grind is a must.

For the fighting bowie, I've looked at the Ontario Bagwell bowies, but if I go custom, the Ernest Mayer fighting bowies seem to be tops. Must have sharp point, sharpened false edge, and a very ergonomic handle. 8"-10" range is what I'm looking for here.

For the camp bowie, I'm looking at the Busse Basic 9, Livesay's RTAK, and Ernest Mayer's Y2K Camp Knife. 9"-12" range is what I'm looking for here.

Lynn, the OAL of the fixed blades I carry are 6" to 6.5". The average length of my fixed blades for using is about 7.5". My kitchen knives range from the small parring knife to a thin bladed slicer of 14.75" (9" blade). The 14" bowie knives I made for the cutting contest in Washington have a 10" blade and so far, that is all the cutting they have done. Hmmmmm. Might get one out to cut the Ham this Christmas.
