Average puuko spine thickness?

Hi there,

When I look at pictures of puuko's most have a scandi grind (and they should have I guess!). The grind seems to be fairly steep often. What stock thickness do I need to get a good scandi grind?

I am confused after reading that 3 mm blade/stock thickness is about average for a puuko. A steep grind on 3 mm blade thickness, although possible, would be a very narrow bevel though - that I am sure of. I don't own a puuko, maybe it's hard to tell from pictures.

What blade/stock thickness to you guy's use to get a nice/average scandi grind on your puuko?
Thanks!

It varies alot between makers and ideologies. Some makers like Pekka use a very thick stock while others like Malanika use relatively thin stock.

Because of the rhomboid shape it's actually kind of difficult to tell how thick the blade actually is, at least for me.

I prefer a slightly thicker stock which I find to remove wood better (as long as it's relatively thin behind the edge), because wood is the main cutting medium for my scandis.

I own customs by Ahti's are my work horses. They must be doing something with the grinds that other lauri makers are not.

:)

Very often puukkos (puukkot, if you want to look pedantic) are rhombic in cross section, meaning somewhere in the middle of the stock is going to be thicker than the spine, which may factor in when creating the bevel.
I have used/owned/handled a great many and they're generally 1/8th inch or so thick at the spine.

SwissHeritageCo SwissHeritageCo a rhomboid shape! Now i see it! Thank you. That was very helpful.

I think I am not going to get fixated on the thickness on the blade. If I understand it right it depends of what they are intended to be used for. Wood whittling obviously has different requirements than hunting...
Thanks all :)

If I had my preference it would be 2mm or 3/32” depending on the source. For a Leuku maybe 0.1 or 3mm.

Was it by chance you picked that example? That knife is a Hackman & Co. Tapio Wirkkala Puukko. The reference made above to the rhomboid cross section of the blade was carried through the monoform Nylon handle, brass butt and bolster brilliantly by Wirkkala. It’s a masterpiece of functional minimalist design. It’s also in the Permanent Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.

I just knew that the Tapio Wirkkala Puukko is a popular design. I didn't know it was part of the Permanent Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art in NYC though :). Nice detail. Thanks for sharing. It is beautiful
