AVG Update Difficulties

If you're getting error messages as AVG tries to do its daily update the problem is not on your computer. Sometimes it says "The update control file is missing" and sometimes it says "connection lost." Seems AVG came out with something new and their servers are grossly overloaded with people downloading it.

Probably the best response for most people is to just wait for the congestion to clear; I guess it'll only take a day or two and going without virus updates for a day or two is not a significant risk for most people.

If you want, though, you can still update manually: go to http://free.avg.com/ww.download-update and download the update virus file IAVI: / 1532 (24megs!) to your AVG8 directory. Then doubleclick the AVG icon in your tray, click Tools and Update from Directory, and choose that directory.

That's not going to be very practical for people using dialup (24megs!) and difficult for people who don't know what a directory is or how to find one, but you should be fine if you just wait a day or two until the automatic update starts working again.

is that for the free version? i was reading that the free version was only able to update through the program and not from their website. my friend has the free version which i plan on removing and replacing with avast.

Yes, that was for the free version -- that's what I have. I don't know if people with the paid version are having the same problem, but I presume they must be; I doubt there's any difference in the way they're updated.

I'm still on AVG 7.5 and it seemed to have updated fine at about 12 noon Eastern today (Thur Jul/3) -
after reading this thread just now, I tried an update and AVG (7.5) said I already had the latest update.

The advantage of the regular automatic update through one's client program is that the updates are incremental - ie: the update files are MUCH smaller in the order of a few hundred Kb or few (single digit) Mb- the manual update file as Cougar points out is 24Mb - that's huge.

Yeah, that's gotta be every update for the past 10,000 years all combined into one. I bet it immunizes against saber-tooth tiger attack.
