I'm thinking this is a good summer to go back to the aviator style of sun glasses. I'm thinking either grey or gold mirror finish, polarization is always a good thing, and of course 100% UV protection.

The catch is money is a major issue; does anybody have any recommendations?

Ray Bans, if you want to go traditional. In fact, if going with the aviator style, I'd go only with Ray Bans.

I own an old, old pair of the light sensitive Ray Bans that go darker when outside. Only problem, they never really get dark enough if you're in really bright areas, like snow in bright sunlight. I don't know if that line is still available, however. The set I own has the flexible temple pieces that literally hook behind the ears for greater security. That's the good thing. The bad thing is I sweat a lot in the summer, and my sweat reacts with the metal in the temple pieces, which in turn creates some sort of irritation where they contact my ears. I ended up getting some flexible covers to keep that from happening.

Forget the Ray Bans if you're the least bit hard on glasses. The frames are very fragile and if you bend 'em you can't buy replacement parts. I've used the frames for years for my Rx and they only last a coupla years. I've switched to Randolph Engineering frames and I'll report back to you in a coupla years.:D

Randolph Engineering or American Optical frames are much stronger and you can get either the "square" style or the "teardrop" in either brand.

Hidalgo has gold-mirrored dark grey lenses for the 52mm Randolph Aviator. They have a Visible Light Transmission of 5%!! That dark enough for you? Cost you about $30 for just the lenses or $107 for frames and lenses. Go to www.hidalgos.com and order a catalog. I've been buying from them for nearly 20 years. Great service.

American Optical Aviators are good stuff, too. and the prices I've seen on the 'net aren't bad.
