Avoiding rust...

I always have a million projects going on at once, and the knife (1084) I'm working on can sit a bit. #2 rusted pretty badly, but that was 100% my fault, as I left it in the garage which stays pretty humid. If I lubricate the blade with Ballistrol and make a sheath out of paper towel and painter's tape, will that prevent the rust? I'd prefer to leave all my works in progress in the garage, but can bring it inside if what I'm suggesting won't work. Let me know and thanks!

Different direction, how about a hot box to keep the humidity at bay. A plywood box with a hinged panel with a simple light fixture inside could keep it warm enough to negate the humidity in the air.

In my experience, carbon steels rust if you look at them wrong. Plain WD 40 works for me, but only if I'm diligent. Otherwise, I'll go out a day or 2 later and find rust spots. I've thought about switching to AEB-L or something, but that seems drastic for a minor issue.

T9 boeshield or paste wax, never had issues with those. I use a paste wax made of mineral oil and beeswax so it's food safe but general use knives usually get boeshield.

I use plain wd40 in a spray bottle, my climate is humid as well. One thing I've found, don't let blades touch other metal, any temp swings will cause condensation, and then it will rust.

Damn...this exactly what happened. Thanks for the advice.

You guys gonna laugh !!
Bowling alley wax !!! or Bostich Glidecoat that i use to protect my milling machine, bandsaw tables with..
back when we were all much younger the "Shop Teacher" used to have one of us wax the crap out of the bandsaw/table saw/joiner tables to prevent rust and keep them slick
well that "Wax" is not the "Bostitch Glidecoat" spray work in dry it wipe it off .. id use either on high carbon as temporary until i finished it .. then permanent coating..
Yes i know many are asking "What's a Shop Teacher" ?? (he-he)

Personally the one I trust is the wd40 specialist long term corrosion inhibitor. I've tested this on my own somewhat
