My regular EDC rotation includes nothing but modern folders, including Spydercos, Benchmades, and recently a William Henry.

Then I stumble across the Traditional forum.

Suddenly I find myself agonizing over which Peanut to buy. Should my first be a Stag? Oooh... I like that blue bone. But wait, they don't make those in CV. Ah, check out that Chestnut! Oh, the drama!

You guys are bad for me.

Don't give in to the temptation. Don't bother with the kiddie blades, get yourself a man-sized knife. ;) Coming from Benchmades and Spydercos you shouldn't have any problem carrying something like a GEC Scout.

Oh indeed. Man can only take so much black G-10 and/or FRN.

Welcome to the madness... It's all downhill from here. If you can keep it down to one new knife per month you'll be lucky. :)

The variety of traditionals is fascinating. Peanuts, Barlows, Trappers, Stockmen...

Blue bone Peanut in route.

Hmmm... those GEC's do look nice. Burnt stag scout? Sweet.

I think the desire for something more than titanium and g10 is what drives a lot of people to traditionals. Be prepared the variety is what will drag you in. Before you know it you will have a short list 20 knives deep. I second something like a GEC 72 or 73, big single blade will be familiar territory from modern knives. Or you could go the complete opposite direction and get a small multiblade so your not comparing apples to oranges.

Welcome to the madness, you've started down the dark path well. Get the GEC 73 or 72. Pick up one of the GEC 15 series blades. A Buck 301. An Opinel. Anything from the Case Bose line, but definitely a sway back jack. CV does narrow the hunt down a little bit. One of the Queen cattle kings, especially in amber carved stag bone, would be a good addition. Get yourself a subscription to Knife World, it is a fun and informative read. See if you can find any knife books, hang out here. The Blade Guide to Knives has an adequate pic of most of the traditional folder patterns out there.

Some modern folders out there still hold my attention, mainly Chris Reeve;), but those William Henrys are pretty good looking too, and I've developed a fascination with balisongs. However, there are so many different patterns to choose from for both folders and fixed blades, the traditional market is endless. Examples can be had going back as far as the turn of the 20th century, without breaking the bank. They are a darn fine sight purtier than most of the moderns I've seen so far though.

Yes brother, you have made a great choice! Now you can come to the arms of the Cult Of The Peanut. There will be many more in your future. :thumb up:

Now, come and drink the Kool-Aid.

Hmmm... I haven't paid much attention to traditionals since I was a kid. The only ones I own right now (before the Peanut arrives) are a new Buck 110, my old Case Boy Scout from the '60s, and a Case Masonic lockback. Queen, GEC, etc are new to me but I like a lot of what I see.

I can see that going down this path is going to take some discipline and a strategy.

Boy, I'll say. I just tripped up (so much for discipline) and ordered a GEC 47 Viper in Bocate tonight. I have been enamored of late with wood covers and wharncliffe blades have been a continuous weakness.

You're going to like that peanut. It's small, but capable and very easy to befriend.

I can understand how you feel about the blue bone. Here's my favorite Case pattern in blue bone.

I'm glad you chose to jump in and get one. They're priced reasonably, and not likely to disappoint. Case Peanuts are interesting, even if it doesn't become a main EDC. I tried it for a while, but used it to compliment other knives in the end. I'm another Modern folder burnout, and understand where you're at. I appreciate them, and own a number of them, but currently there's nothing out there I have to have. If I need a blade quick I'll reach for my fixed blade (my one hand knife).

Nice. Navy blue bone mini Copperhead? (I'm learning :D )

I've spent an enjoyable evening sipping two fingers of Makers 46 and browsing various maker's websites. I'm beginning to learn a bit about the brands, along with some patterns and materials. I've already started building a wishlist. I seem to like ebony and snakewood.

I was a bit disappointed to discover Schatt & Morgan's Peanut is done in 420. Really? I would expect that from a cheap Chinese knife. The brand seems to be well thought of so what am I missing?
