Awesome knife website!! must see.

That is a great site. His article on there about taking advantage of newer steels capabilities, has lead me to put 12-13* edges per side on a lot of my knives. I believe our own member Gator97 is the owner of that site. Lots of good info.

I have the app for android, it is def packed full of info! Great App

Nicsotil, if you go to the website you can look at the top right hand corner and it shows a link for the apple store and google play links you to both the stores with the app.

Thanks everyone for kind words :)
The Knife Steel FAQ article is by our Joe Talmadge and yes, it was last updated by him in 2005, it's been on zknives.com with his permission for a while. The same FAQ is also on BF, and many other knife sites. I do not want to modify what's not mine, although I did add links to respective steel compositions mentioned in the article and added notes about discontinued products.

As for the apps, they're not exactly steel FAQ, they are android/iphone versions of the online knife steel chart which is also linked from the FAQ. Small notes attached to steel records in the chart serve similar purpose.

Site is being actively worked on, at this time main focus being steel chart data collection, i.e. finding/adding new alloys to the database, 5100 and counting, and adding new functionality to the database and comparison graph engine. Individual pages have their own last modified date.

Thanks for the site, Gator97. I use it as a reference whenever I see a steel I don't recognize or I need to compare two or more steels. thanks to Gator97 I now know that X50CrMoV15 is not some exotic super steel, but a version of 440A with less chromium.

I am now a convert to sandpaper/mouse pad sharpening. I have also used his observations when making knives, especially the concept of very fine blade angles(20 degrees total or less) combined with hard steel (at least Rc60, prefer Rc62-63)
