Yesterday I ordered a small custom from www.bladeart.com that was advertised in their clearance section. (along with a Mini Crawford KFF w/spydiehole
)
The knife is made by Jeff Angelo, a South African maker, and it's a small gents folder with warthog ivory scales and a 2.75" ATS-34 blade with a flipper instead of a thumb stud. One of the coolest parts of this knife is that the handle is milled from a solid piece of titanium, then the liner is inset into the handle. Truly an amazing design in its own right.
I had been looking at the knife for a couple of days but could never find anything on this maker here at the forums. So I posted a request for info in the Custom Knives area and still did not hear anything.
I have typically avoided buying from makers over seas because of concerns that if the knife ever needed repair it would be a nightmare to have serviced, that coupled with the fact that I had no idea who Jeff Angelo was had me a little hesitant to make the purchase. After a few e-mails back and forth to Larry, he assured me that I would be very happy with the knife and that the QC and overall quality would surpass my expectations.
The knife arrived today and I have nothing but good things to say about it
The blade is perfectly ground, razor sharp and checkered on the flipper to assist in opening as well as lend traction to your thumb. The milling of the handle is perfect and the liner sets into the handle almost to the point where it is seamless.
There is no blade play whatsoever (I mean none) and it's smooth as butter. I also like the fact that it appears to have bronze washers which I prefer.
The wharthog ivory is simply gorgeous, nicely veined and the titanium handle appears to be bead blasted and then annodized a deep bronze/grey color.
Poor QC is one of my biggest pet peeves and I'd say this is one of the best made folders I have ever purchased, that coupled with the fact that I only paid $250 for it ($125 off) makes it that much better
If you are looking for a wonderful gents folder I would go to Bladeart and buy one as I think he has a few left.
Here's a picture, not of mine but I borrowed it from their site.
