There are three basic types of AWOL as prescribed by Article 86 of the UCMJ. Aggravating circumstances, which authorize more severe punishments might arise when there is "an intent to abandon such duties" and "where there is an intent to avoid maneuvers or field exercises."
Failure to go to appointed place of duty." This offense requires that the accused actually knew of the appointed time and place of duty. It must be established, of course, that the accused (your knife) was required to be at the appointed place at a prescribed time. In this case, no specific intent is required.
"Going from the appointed place of duty." The elements of this type of unauthorized absense are the same as above. . .except it must be established that the accused (again, your knife) left the place of duty without proper authority, rather than failed to report in the first place. The accused (your knife) must have reported for and entered upon the duty, before the time he, she or it left without proper authority.
And finally. . .
Absent from unit, organization or other place of duty." The key considerations here are the "inception and duration of the unauthorized absense." Circumstances beyond the control of the accused (your knife) usually must be shown to establish a valid defense. For example, if "Joe Bubba aka Cub" was authorized 10-day period of absense and said absense expired on 24 December and he, she or it failed to sign back in with his, her or its unit by 25 December. . ."Joe Bubba aka Cub" would not be guilty of AWOL. . .if he, she or it could establish being at a distant city and had purchased an airline ticket on a flight that was canceled due to a blizzard.
The authorized maximum punishment for these offense varies with the duration of the absense. The maximum sentence is a severe spanking and confinement of 18 months. This severe sentence may be imposed when the unauthorized absense exceeds 30 days and was terminated by apprehension.

Do you know the were abouts of any relatives ? Men or women friends ?
Have you checked with the airlines ? Bus stations ? Train stations ? Taxi companies ? Seedy neighborhoods in your area ?
Were you raising the "Cub" to the best of your ability. . .were you caring for. . . . .maintaining it's edge. . . . .slowly and carefully wiping it down periodically with a Tuff Cloth MISTER ?
