Hi guys,

My son's scout troop needs some covers for the edges on their axes and bow saws. I have said I would make some for the troop. Any ideas for inexpensive edge covers. I don't think a nice leather cover would be the thing for scout use. I was thinking of splitting some plastic pipe for the bow saw cover. Anybody done anything like this?

TIA

For me plastic pipe takes too much time and effort with all the heating and forming, I just use rubber hose until I get around to making leather sheaths.

yep, red rubber will stay on saw without paracord if right dia is used and easy to see when removed as well

I've used garden hose and rubber bands. Cheap, and easy to replace. I also like split copper tubing. You can hammer it to the shape of axes so it fits like it was made for the axe. Copper also works good to line leather sheaths to protect the leather.

One warning though copper and steel can create galvanic action. The steel usually loses. It works great for short term safety, not so great for long term storage.

I bought a fire hose to cut up and use based on some tips I read here. Have not had time to try it yet though.

I need a rivet gun to get started.

I'd never thought of that... great tip. I seem to collect lead coated copper from downspouts and other assorted on many of our jobs. Usually the pieces are a bit small to recycle but there are a fair amount of 5-1/2" x 4" when I'm restoring Doug Fir Gutters (I'm outside of Newport, RI...lots of wooden gutters).

With the lead coating I suspect we might not see any galvanic reaction. It would also be easy to fabricate, forgiving and very durable.

Thank you for the advice...
