Axe day at the gun show

So this post is a bit late in coming because my computer was out of memory, but the first weekend in February is Gun Show weekend around here. I had not gone to a Feb. show in a few years (breaking both legs and my second stint in University don't leave much extra cash), and the wife was okay with me going. I grabbed my tip money (Massage therapy tips constitute my cutlery budget) and ran. It was much better than I had expected. Of course the production vendors were out with their overpriced new wares, one guy had his speech really down pat- however he was not expecting an educated buyer. His eyes bugged out as he was trying to sell me a $175 Bark River Mini Canadian and I told him of my Mini/Micro/Northstar matching set in dayglo G10:eek:. Made me laugh!

I don't go to these events for new things, I go for good deals on used or unmarked cutlery, or materials for making knives. In this case it was meant to be a chopper day. 2 vendors brought me this:

I am the most excited about the pipe hawk and the francisca thrower. The pipe is a home made job- a Swedish axe cut down and drilled for the bowl. Perfectly smokable, however the bowl is filled with crud and until I clean it I don't trust anything (any suggestions on cleaning oily sludge from a pipe hawk?). It has great heft and seems like it will be a really good user. The throwers were from an old buckskinner who does not do too much re-enactments any more, but the larger thrower was his personal one and the heart hawk was his wife's. The little hawk handle is much too small for any hawk I have, so I guess I'll save it for when I get a forge and make my first baby hawk! I paid a bit too much for a couple, got a deal on others, and am happy with what I departed with and what I took home. I don't mind paying a bit more for personality as long as you don't try and shyster me!

I don't know much about the axe head- it is marked Watson (a Canadian company from what I have found), and seems to be good steel. It has a very narrow eye, not sure how I want to hang it quite yet- does anybody have pictures of axes like this? The back spike is rather obtuse, I'm not sure what the original use was- at first I thought mining, but it looks almost original, while the blade has been used and taken care of until the handle broke by the looks of things.

I look forward to testing them out when car camping on our first trip this year, and maybe throwing hawks for the first time as well- I have enough of them now (some Cold Steel and a couple others as well) to give it a go.

I was director of student services for CCMH (Canadian college of massage and hydrotherapy) a number of years ago. What massage therapy college did you attend?

Best regards

Gee, I don't know how to get the resin out of your pipe, may try burning it out with a small propane bottle torch and pushing some wire through the hole.

Thanks for the comments so far all.

Robin- I Graduated from Grant MacEwan University last June, and have been working and loving it so far. Very removed from past jobs and that is great!!!

two massage therapists in this thread? OK I gotta ask, do old ladies hit on you while you are massaging their naked parts? lets hear the good stories!

If you meant me, I'm not a massage therapist, I just help save them from nervous breakdowns from the workload:D
Massage therapy is a very serious profession, you may be thinking of body rub parlors.

Nice score! I have rarely seen axes or hawks at gun shows. I did find a neat little hawk at a show once, but everything else were cheap little hatchets.

Looks like a good time. I'm a bit jealous of that francisca, i've loved the look of those things since the first time i saw a picture of one.
