axe eye damage

My council tool boys axe came loose, and I had to replace the handle on it. My concern is that when I drilled out the aluminum wedge, I accidentally had two spots in which a drilled slightly into the actual axe head itself (the inside of the eye). The removed metal was not super deep, and would not affect re-hafting. Should I be concerned about the integrity of the axe, would the head cracking be a legitimate issue?

Just check it after every use. It should be fine if you didn't drill into a thin part on the side of the axe head, if you drilled into the poll or cheek you'll definitely be fine.

One gouge is less than 2mm deep, probably more toward 1mm deep. The other is probably a half milimeter, both are on the side of the inside of the eye.

You should be fine. I own and have heavily used plenty of axes that were made with eye walls only a few mm thick. A couple of gouged spots shouldn't be anything to worry about.
