Well, I have a couple of great double-bit vintages and a single-bit, so I need to find a source for really, really good wood. Anybody got any ideas?cwd

I think Tennessee Hickory has the best wood (2nd growth hickory with 5-20 growth rings per inch). You can find them at a few retail outlets or online at 'Hickory Handle Store' (google it). Their handles tend to be a bit too fat and need some slimming but it's the finest hickory.

House Handle also has very good wood and a better shape right from the factory than TH has.

For boy's axe handles and cruiser handles you will often find nice ones at Ace Hardware. They carry O.P. Link handles and for some reason their boy's and cruiser handles seem to be better than their full size handles.

Whichever you choose look for handles in which the grain runs the full length of the handle and doesn't "run out". And if the grain runs parallel to the axe head then it's a bit stronger.

Are you looking for pre-shaped handles or high quality lumber to make them from scratch?
