Axe hang question - what to do when the top of the eye is flared?

I have an old axe head that has been kicking around without any efforts towards hanging it for a decade or so.

I'll post pictures once I find it again in the next couple days, but the problem is that the whole thing is pretty beat up and the top of the eye is way larger than the bottom. I know that the wedge will make up for some of this, but it'd be a very large wedge and that will only account for sideways thickness. I don't want to put a perpendicular wedge in to try to expand it into the front of the eye where there would be a significant gap for any handle that will fit through the bottom of the eye.

What is the best approach, other than leaving it in the box without a handle for another decade?

One custom-shaped wedge might be able to fill the front and back gaps at the same time it provides the normal sideways wedging.

Just to clarify...has the top been beaten larger than normal? I ask because the top portion of the eye is supposed to be larger to assist with creating a mechanical wedge once the wooden wedge is inserted. Also, check the front-to-back measurements...some hafts are larger in that respect.

If you need to expand the haft toward the bit and poll you can use a wood cross wedge or two.
