Well today I was off and went junking. I was sure glad I did. I found an old Norlund hatchet for 12.00 and was doing flips. I couldn't believe my luck. I will need to possibly rehandle it. I hardly ever see Norlunds. Then the 12 year old finds a Norlund axe in another booth and brings it to me. I have never seen the axe for sale. It was 18.00. Man, a matching pair for 30.00. I then found a Sharpcutter meat cleaver. Short and stubby with a nice maple handle 12.00, I would work well for a project rehab and bush sheath of sorts. 1.00 bought me a pair of Kombi gortex gloves. Then to an old hardware store to look for some handles. I found a bunch wrapped in a plastic tie. Talked to the girl and she said it was old stock from the attic. Bought 4 for 5.00 each. One was a boys axe handle that may work for the Norlund. Now if anyone knows who makes the exact replacement handle for the Norlunds, let me know. I don't like the Link handles that I have seen before. It was a damp rainy day but worth the trip to town. Oh, almost forgot the 2.00 standard thermarest without a leak.and a 2.00 grill that looks like a bucket with folding legs and an inner pot for the coals. I was looking for a can to stash in the woods to cook on. This will do fine. Keep looking for the deals. I don't like to pay full price for anything. Junking is my favorite thing to do in bad weather. Regards.

Replacement handles are not exact for the most part. Gransfors and another one or two do, but otherwise is in a general thing. A replacement 36" handle will fit most 3.5 lb heads and etc. they make them a bit oversize and and to trim down to correct size.

Wow, great finds. 2 Norlunds at a flea market? What are the odds! Hope you can post some pictures!

I'll try and do that in am. Maybe throw in a couple of other things to view while I'm at it. Just take a picture of a pile. I'm really slow on the picture posting. Hate to say it, but I have my wife do it since I am not a computer guy. I just need to do it a number of times to get it down, then watch out. Regards

Hey LA, I'm a junk store dweller as well, can't wait till the summer yard sales start. Nice finds bud, congrats

Best regards

It's a curse. I just have a good eye for stuff and can't leave a good deal alone. I will buy stuff and eventually pass it on to those less fortunate. The more you know about stuff the harder it gets. It's the same as skills. The older you get, the more you have. You have to live an ever learning life style. The more you do, the more tools you mass. Maybe one day I will retire and live off my skills making the things I love to do. I was talking to someone about braintanning today, then realized how much older I have become and how work intensive it is. Taking an old axe and working it up is a lot of fun to me. Now, if I had the skills to make works of art to cover them, like some people I have enjoyed meeting on this forum, I would be set with the whole package. Those Norlunds are just so cute that they deserve to become heirlooms. There is something magical about handmade products. I will pick something up, and turn it over in my hand for a long time. My wife thinks it's crazy, but she doesn't create a thing.

Yes, it is an addiction. My late Wife and I were in the antiques business for years and collected everything from dolls to native baskets and on and on and on. When we decided to move to the boonies we sold our collection of 650 pieces:D and I still have a couple of hundred things around.
Re a sheath for your hatchet. Watch for my upcoming WIP/tutorial on how I make sheaths. I need a sheath for a hatchet i have so you'll be able to make one for yourself. It ain't brain surgery:D:D:D

Best regards

Had to recalculate my first post. 12.00 and 18.00 is not 20.00. You guys are so kind for not bringing up my midnight math. Lol. Late night postings in a fog. Still 30.00 is a great deal for the Norlund pair.
