Hey everyone, long time lurker of Blade Forums, specifically the axe and throwing knife threads, I've really enjoyed the "what did you rehang/sharpen today" threads. I recently acquired several items from my Grandfather (he's still kicking at 93 down in Florida) when he moved, and sadly most of them are claimed by my family members. However, since I have been playing around in my garage for the past year, that gives me the most experience in my family other than my dad to rehang and sharpen the four blades here. Fair warning, never posted a picture in here, no idea if these will even show up.

Sadly you all didn't get to see the terrible handles for the Marbles #6 (cracked and rotted) and the no name... axe? Someone will be able to tell me the proper word for it, again I'm new to most of this. Anyway that handle was cracked, and the two remaining hatchets are loose and I would like to rehang simply for the experience and the look, as these will all be given to other family members.

I apologize to everyone for the file marks near the stamp, there were what looked like vise teeth marks that I removed. And obviously for several of these I initially attempted to sharpen them, however realized I'm bad at it and my cheap made in China files from my local store wouldn't cut it.

The axe I'm currently attempting to practice sharpening with my new Nicholson file, just saw a post about how the new ones made in Mexico aren't as good as the old. I guess that's usually the story around here.

Anyway if anyone can identify any of the three blades other than the Marbles or what they're for and what kind of edge I should be trying to put on those last two (or all, actually preferably all, please help me not ruin these), I would appreciate it.

The last hatchet looks like a hand forged European? hatchet. The axe is a michigan pattern common axe. The hammer/hatchet is a semi common half hatchet. Was your grandfather a blacksmith or from Europe by any chance? Because the hatchet is a odd pattern hewing hatchet.

Thanks for the reply, and for posting the pictures directly! I attempted to edit the post, but BF said I was attempting to post a malicious link and prevented me from trying something else so I left it alone.

He went to Europe twice, at the end of WW2 as an pilot and again either directly before or after Korea. He may have picked it up then or he may have bought it at a flea market ten years ago, he does not remember unfortunately.

The one is a standard half hatchet, a general purpose tool for carpentry...ect.
It looks like probably one of the old soft bodied cast ones based on the condition of the hammer poll.

Does that Michigan pattern right after the marbles have ridges in the eye ?
