Hello, I found this at the local flea this morning. There are markings that I am unable to read. Is this a Norlund style? or a Tomahawk?, or something else ?. Overall length is 15", the cutting edge is 4-1/4", and the head measures 6" across. The striking face measures 1" x 2". I will try to post a close-up of the stamp. Thanks, Lou

Something else alright...
Its a classic Russian style. Might explain its unreadable stamping too !!

Utility hatchet from somewhere in Europe or USSR is my guess. A close up of the stamp will very likely get you some better answers.

Hello, Thanks for the info. I am a much better carpenter than I am a photographer, but I will try another close-up. Regards, Lou

Hatchet-Axe

Some Russian топор discussions here in the forums:

They are kind of addressed along the way:

Previous post about them – A couple of them look similar to yours.

And here is a cool resource for them from Rusknife. Note Turbo4x4’s axes in there. He might be a guy to ask about them.

They are interesting patterns and actually have a lot of subtle differences when you start looking at the manufacturing, region, pre and post War eras, time periods, materials, traditions, etc. They have stories, I am sure.

Get a clearer shot of the mark on it and it might match up with a known maker. Somewhere I saw a large list or at least a photo of a list that has a fair number of older makers –if you speak Russian. I’ll post it if I can find again.

You should make it sharp and try it out.
