So I'm looking to get a new hatchet or tomahawk and I was thinking what do you guys think is better for general chopping and yard work? Hatchet or tomahawk

For backpacking, weight is critical, a lightweight tomahawk is what I like. You can replace the haft if you have to, or use the head by itself.
At home, I like to have a heavier head to help do the work, axes or a hatchet. I have a double bit hatchet, works well for limbing or doing small chores. But, I'd rather get something like a small forest axe to add to my small collection. I think I like a 20" handle, you can use two hands or one. I need to get something in this size range, I like them better than a short hatchet.

Neither imo. A boys axe is a good all around choice for yard work. You will get more done with the longer handle and heavier weight for stump removal and gnarly branches. Splitting wood etc. Depends on what you want to do with it. Plenty of choices depending on your budget.
A hatchet is handy but limited for yard work.
With that said get what ever you want and try it out.

General work and chopping I would rather a hatchet over a tomahawk. if you want to trim of branches you may want a saw so you don't scar up trees or bushes for aerrant swing. if you are chopping larger stuff a lot you may weant a smaller axe for heavier work.

Get a small folding saw for thick stuff and a woodsmans pal is my go to for yard work. I've never even thought to grab my hatchet or axe for limbing the trees we have.

im also a fan of the 'boys axe'. i have a GB forest axe and the CT 'boys axe' and they are both fantastic tools to have around...
i have quite a few hatchets, but they really dont see that much use. i also have a CS trailhawk, its OK, but i wouldnt really want to have to depend on it for very much...
its fun to throw though
